One thing I didn't notice for a while was that moment after the gang finds out Alex regretted turning down the fellowship. Michael just hangs his head in dismay. I wonder now if he was thinking of that piece he wrote about Alex in college. Plus, notice how Sarah was quick to point out that Alex was angry about that article? When you consider how hostile she is to Michael during the film, and when you remember that she was Alex's lover for a time, it's so revealing to produce that article in the last act of the film. It says a lot about Alex and Michael and Sarah's dynamics without being in our faces.
