What is Migraine and what are the tests to confirm it? - Dr. Suresh H S

Severe throbbing pulsatile unilateral recurrent headache is called Migraine headache. This headache is more common in adult and younger age group. It affect 15 to 16% of our population is more common in ladies and interest in families. It is preceded by and sometime accompanied by nausea or vomiting, itching in the limbs sometime flashes of light and the unusual blind spots in the vision. There are many triggering factors which triggers the headache. The triggering factors include flash of light, sound, stress, sometimes the food will also trigger the headaches also smoking and alcohol are also factors which trigger the headache. There is no test which confirm the migraine headache however we have to rule out certain organic structural factors which are responsible for headache before labeling it has a Migraine headache. MRI, CT scan are Very important investigation to rule out structural lesions like, Tumor, infection, bleeding and other organic structural problems. LP (Lumbar Puncture) with the CSF analysis is also useful to exclude infection and bleeding problems. MR Venography source there is a transverse sinus abnormality in 50% of cases however in remaining 50% of cases MRV is normal. So normal MRV does not exclude the diagnosis of migraine headache.
