Alexander Karelin is the greatest wrestler of all time.
887 wins (undefeated for 12 years )
3×Olympic champion
9×World champion

Kerelin seems like a really nice guy, he went on to coach the only guy to beat him and his smile seemed very genuine. He looks oddly friendly for someone so scary.

In all fairness Karelin isn't solely a hero or legend in Russia he's a hero to many young American wrestlers as well.

- We can't defeat that crazy russian!
- So let's change the rules and put a sumo bag so he can't pull that off the floor!
- Brilliant!!!

Imagine driving down a road, then seeing a man wrestling a cow.

Well that's an American stereotype if I ever saw one. Gardner was too fat for even Alexander the Great to lift

I would call this the most embarrassing way to beat a world champion in wrestling.

So he won and beat the greatest greco roman wrestler of all time by doing absolutely nothing? I don't get it?

How to beat the greatest wrestler of all time: just change the rules before the competition in Sydney Olympic Games

6:22 genuine smile for an old adversary

Karelin used to live in the same block where I grew up on the 5th floor above us. When we were moving in, the lifts were out in the block - Alexander loaded a double sided American style fridge freezer on his back and lugged it up the stairs, didn’t even get out of breath.

Karelin had beaten Gardner 6-0 (!) before that much. It was Karelin's 3rd match of the day, btw. And as for rule change - very recent rule change right before this match, specifically meant to do something with Karelin's domination

The Russian was the better wrestler. The American first won because of change in rules and then because he was to heavy to lift.

I don't know wrestling, but losing a point to a recent rule change for letting go first? Hardly worth making a video about this event. Rather make a video about his actual achievements.

Wow... so heroic. He was too fat to be thrown and he got awarded 1 point because of a recent rule change.

it was his last olympics, he ended career soon after that... no one could even beat alexandr at his prime... also that change of rules were joke.

That's how McDonalds makes you an olympic champion, ladies and gentlemen!

One young player of the Yugoslavia water pool national team was so fascinating about Karelin that he was searching the whole Olympic village in Sidney until he has found Kareling and got Karelin's photo signed. Later when sensation happened and Karelin lost the final his teammates (pranked) made a story that Karelin is searching for him because signing the photo for him gave bad luck to Karelin. The poor fellow was hiding for some time until he realized that all was just a joke to scare him.

I was in shock when this happened. Karelin is a MASTER of his sport and was beautiful to watch
