What Is A Negative Dilute Drug Test Result

Many times employers get back a negative dilute drug test result and are often confused. What does it mean that the specimen is negative dilute?

When the lab reports a specimen as dilute, there are certain levels of creatinine and specific gravity that determine that the specimen may be dilute.

This basically means that the donor consumed a larger quantity of water before providing the urine specimen. This may be normal as many folks drink a lot of water for health reasons or because of a fear of not being able to urinate at the time of the drug test specimen collection.

This may be abnormal as perhaps the donor is drinking an excessive quantity of water in an attempt to cheat on the drug test. So there is a little bit of “gray” area concerning specimens that are reported as dilute.

First and foremost, if the report from your Medical Review Officer is Positive Dilute, the result is Positive and the company should follow policy for the Positive result. The indication that the specimen was dilute may be interesting, but it is not relevant to the handling of the positive test result.

did you ever think that maybe the person drinks a lot of water because they are told to by the testing facility? maybe they aren't trying to hide anything. we tell people to drink lots of water, because we don't want them there for four hours trying to pee.

Ive been crying for 2 days straight. They told my my first drug screening was diluted. So i skipped my birthday weekend so that i wouldn't even have alcohol before the test the next morning. Then i held my pee all night and took it first thing in the morning. Mid stream, no water, first pee... and it was STILL almost entirely translucent. Ive never done drugs in my entire life. And now i may lose the job of a life time all because I can't potty right?!

I got fired after 2 negative diluted results, my second test I had them watch me pee into a cup to prove it's not tampered. I worked for the government.

Mine was pre-employment screening. It's been hanging over my head all weekend. What if they cut their losses & move on to another candidate? Fortunately, they accepted the result as a negative. I start next week.

Only wish I knew about this issue before testing. I would've preferred to drink a normal amount of water. But I thought I'd fail if I didn't produce a sample.

I drink a lot of water for health reasons and had this happen to me. I always get negative results so this is the first time it's happened. I don't do drugs and am trying to be healthy so this was upsetting. I re tested this morning so hopefully it's not the same. If it is I lose my job over drinking water

How ridiculous. My new job asked me to take a 2nd drug test because the first one came back Negative Dilute… I live in California where it’s 100 degrees everyday and live a healthy lifestyle so I drink water. If this 2nd one comes back negative dilute I’m scared they might think I’m hiding something. Ive never done a drug in my life.
