Sounds of Mars: NASA’s InSight Senses Martian Wind

preview_player
Показать описание
Listen to Martian wind blow across NASA’s InSight lander. The spacecraft’s seismometer and air pressure sensor picked up vibrations from 10-15 mph (16-24 kph) winds as they blew across Mars’ Elysium Planitia on Dec. 1, 2018.

The seismometer readings are in the range of human hearing, but are nearly all bass and difficult to hear on laptop speakers and mobile devices. We provide the original audio and a version pitched up by two octaves to make them audible on mobile devices. Playback is suggested on a sound system with a subwoofer or through headphones. Readings from the air pressure sensor have been sped up by a factor of 100 times to make them audible. For full-length uncompressed .wav files, visit NASA.gov/sounds

This makes you realize that mars is actually a real place outside of the earth. It’s kind of eerie, knowing that we’re hearing sounds of a place that is devoid of life, the only sounds going on in mars is wind.

That's actually pretty cool. Sure it's "just wind" but think about it, it's wind on another planet. A place where we've never actually set foot, but we can *hear* it.

This is the first time I have heard the sounds of another planet. Thanks NASA and JPL!

As a child, watching the moon landing was the greatest wonder. Now, as an aging adult, I have the privilege of listening to the wind on Mars. Amazing.

sends shivers down my spine. it's scary but yet so mesmerising.
listen with headphones with good bass, just lay back in a quiet room, close your eyes and listen to it and just imagine you're on mars all alone in an empty world... I get the strangest feeling from it, I can't explain, its scary, yet soooo amazing.

The air preassure on Mars is less than 1% of Earth's preassure. It means that the sound waves are extremely weak, so everything is so silent there. And of course, the 24 km/h wind must be much weaker in Mars' rare atmosphere than on Earth! So that's why the sound is so quiet!

If you listen very closely you can hear shotguns sounds, heavy metal and some creatures screaming in pain and denial.

Nothing like a digital reconstruction of data into audible sounds from Elysium plains 34 million miles away to inspire the young.
Someone listening right now could be the one to hear it with their own ears one day.

The sound of wind blowing in your ear.
Except it's blowing on a solar panel.
On Mars.

I heard sounds recorded on Mars! This is amazing. I imagine this is how parents feel when they hear their child's heartbeat in the womb

Fascinating - I wonder if ancients staring at the night stars ever thought we would record the Martian wind.
