Hi map reading company!! Wow, thank you so much. You shed a lot of light. I love the way you’re thinking. Hopefully the manufacturer is watching and may come up with a new design. The mirror is handy for Daily Body Tick Checks when alone, or as a signal mirror if requiring rescue, or to observe a wound from an odd angle.
The closing lid feature is a convenient way to protect the compass interior.
However, most compass enthusiast collect compasses as a hobby, so having variations from multiple makers is an option.
Even saw a military theodolite for sale just a tad steep @ 900.00 dollars.
Cheers!

This is a very balanced review. Excellent.
I normally use the M3G which is the only version I can buy in Australia and find it very effective. I use the Cammenga as backup.
I have an older M3G with 1:15k scale at the front which I use all the time because I make my own 15k maps for hunting purposes, but the new version of M3 has omitted the 15k scale in place of 24k which is not much use in Australia.

As a professional geologist, I use this compass to take dip and strike measurements for mapping geological features and recording slope angles. It's not my go to for hiking (that's my Silva Field) as the Suunto is a scientific instrument for me more than an orienteering aid.

Ok so what compass do you use ? What is the best compass on the market currently ?

I agree your words about the roomer who is incomplete, only 750m in 1:25000 scale. Thats really a big mistake from Suunto. I saw by Silva the horizontal line in the mirror and you explained it in another video how it works. Unfortunately Suunto has only the vertical line, but better one line than nothing. To avoid parallax errors i completed the mirror with a dot on the vertical line. It took some time to find the richt position, but i think i am now spot on. Your suggestion for the place of the roomer is super, but replacing the point to put the lanyard is not a good idee in my opinion. In the middel of the baseplate is wat i prefer. And i wisch the magnifying glas was al little greater. But over all, i am very satisfied with my new Suunto MC-2. Before i had a Recta DP-6G but had to replace it because the declination adjustment wasn’t no longer good functioned. Sometimes by turning the bezel the declination scale moved also, sometimes over 10 to 20 degrees.
And as an extra, the dimension of the bezel is much greater than buy the Recta DP-6G. Very comfortabel for an old man, and much easier to read.

Couldn’t agree more with this review. I got this as an upgrade to my Silva ranger which still works perfectly fine. The needle on mine is constantly sticking so I cannot trust this compass at all so I never use it. I still use my Silva compass regularly. I don’t need declination adjustments I’m happy to do it manually and the crosshairs on the mirror is one of my favourite features which suunto doesn’t have. I have heard the older models were better. These newer ones with the plastic looking type needle like the one in this video are crap.

THanks for that mate, I got one of these when it was iimportant to me to have a global compass...these days I live up in Swdden and pretty much only use the Silva Expedition 4. I do miss the mirror on the Suunto though.

The MG2 is a standard issue compass we use in our navigation module for Advanced Firefighters (AF) for wildfire navigation training.
I facilitated the AF navigation module two weeks ago I also had the participants/firefighters user the Sunnto A-30 and the feedback from them was - it was a lot easier for them to use, as new learners with mapping and navigation.
We also issue a romer card as part of the navigation equipment, so for me I don’t mind the MC-2G issued compass.

Hello! I've never seen a review of the Sylva 55 Baseplate Military Compass. Its MSRP must be a deterrent, but its prismatic sighting system makes it stand out from the others. Have you considered reviewing this compass?

Would you be willing to g to review your paramo and buffalo gear? I’m especially interested in their trousers wich I’ve seen you wearing. Very little you can find online and I’m in Sweden with no chance of testing.

Shall we presume that since neither the Suunto MC2 nor the Cammenga 3H are your recommended devices for land navigation that in the coming days we will be seeing what is? I sure hope so :)

Some self-proclaimed survival experts say that a mirror compass is good because you can signal with the mirror and start a fire with the magnifying glass. I have a silva mirror compass and I would guess that the magnifier on it is too small to start a fire with, but I've never tried it. In fact, that compass is only included as a spare. I never use it, what I use is a silva baseplate compass.

Why is a mirror useless? I thought it was used to sight an object in the distance more accurately... is this not true? or that that feature is useless? Or some other reason?

Even worse is the quality of this compass! I've had three of these develop substantial bubbles. I baby my compasses and treat them like delicate instruments. I've had a different Suunto baseplate compass that is still going strong after 20+ years. I'm not alone on having this issue with Mc-2 Global, I have seen others complain of same issue in reviews. I Love your reviews!

I have one and not impressed with the way the global needle drags on the base. To get the needle to move I have to wiggle or tap the compass and then I still don’t really trust the direction. So I just end up using my base plate compass instead.

My biggest gripe with Suunto, and it breaks my heart because I am Finn, is that there is always a bit slack around the bezel, so one gets about 2 degrees error because the bezel can literally move a bit to the right or the left in the baseplate. This might not be an issue when I take a bearing, bit if I need to follow a bearing I am given, it might cause quite a lot of walking from the wrong spot to correct spot due to this poor manufacturing.
