Useful practical explanation of ISO as it affects image quality for the photographer the actual source of noise in CCD cameras is simply quantisation noise introduced by them boosting an image which has been captured with only a few quantisation levels (because of low light levels at the sensor) into one with perhaps 10 times as many by effectively making up information which hasn't actually been captured by the sensor.
This is conceptually similar to taking a low resolution picture and scaling it up to many times its original size....the resulting picture artefacts become more noticeable the more the picture is blown up. I think photographers can readily relate to this as an analagous concept. Hope this is helpful
