It happens because your wood has been properly dried and you didn’t pre-drill a pilot. That’s what running it in reverse does, pilot hole hack.

Don’t forget to touch the screw after you run it in reverse.

Here’s a counter tip for you.
#1 don’t use drywall screws for wood use the proper screws.
# 2 never use fine thread for wood.
#3 don’t pack insulation like that. Ever.

I usually just ask it nicely not to split. I have no idea why it works either but it's just as affective.

“Never split wood”
*still splits wood*

Definitely split both times 😂 just use a pilot hole.

Always. Told my wife so many times. Let's do it reverse, it wouldn't split and hurt. Screw principle 101.

Now you know the reason for having a cordless drill and an impact driver in a set. One to drill the pilot hole and the other to drive the screw.

Im a 38F trying to fix things on my own and not make it worse. I appreciated this video. Thabk you. (Fixed my kids bed box spring slats and split the wood a few times 😬 )

This happens because the reversed screw cuts the grain of the wood making a pilot hole, the first screw simply separates the grain causing the split to run with the grain.
Same principle as hitting the tip of a nail before hammering it in. The flattened tip tears the grain on the way through and basically making a pilot hole but the un flattened tip just separates the grain

Still splits I just predrill it’s cleaner work!

It’s a shortcut to predrilling. That’s “why that happens”.

Two ways to do it. The proper way which is pre-drill. and the second way is to blunt the tip of the screw, that way it pushes rather than cuts the fibers and isn't as likely to crack the board. For anything like this like wall installations? ALWAYS pre-drill. Just because it's covered up doesn't mean do it wrong. that's a structural defect now.

You can also use the age old technique of dulling the tip of the screw.

i see a tiny crack on the second one too 😁

It’s because you’re pre drilling with a screw. It’s better to drill a hole with a drill and then screw your screw in the hole.

“I have no idea why”, but all of us here know exactly why.

😂😂 " I have no idea why that happens" 😂

“I’m not sure why that happens”

That doesn’t really instill confidence in your “hacks” lol

All my brain heard was screw, strap on, crack, reverse, and push it.
