Hey Steve, one technique I use all the time to stop a drill from "wandering" when I'm setting a pilot hole is to run the bit for a second in reverse. This bores the starting hole by friction instead of trying to cut the wood with the drill to get the tip started.

Watching your videos have given me the courage to start wood working. Last year my husband bought a Skil saw and I was too scared to use it. He couldn’t get to what I needed done fast enough so I trepidatiously began using the saw. The first few times it felt like my heart would beat out of my chest. Oh lord!!! Now, instead of fear I feel excitement whenever I go out to my shop (that I built from scratch by myself thank you very much). Hehe!! Thank you so much for your videos and your FREE plans!! I know how costly it is to buy all the materials you use to make your videos. As a thank you, I visited your Patreon page and made a donation. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you!!

most people do not know that not only should you dill for EVERY screw, but you should drill two sizes. the first bit is small, (size depending on the hardness of the wood.) drill through both top board and the board you are fastening to. then take a larger bit whose hole clears the threads of the screw and redrill only the top board. that way the screw threads are free and the force of the screw's head will bind the two boards tightly together. if you do not enlarge the top board's hole then if there is a gap between the boards when you lay them together there will still be a gap there after the joint. the thread in the first board will hold the screw as it goes though the gap space and on into the bottom board and the gap will not close.

Steve You Are Awesome!! I have always wanted to begin my journey into Wood-Working and your video tutorials and guides have helped me, specially by demystifying everything, and thus reducing my anxiety, because it was all so overwhelming, with so many details and different tools and techniques in this trade, that I just didn't know where to start, and would continuously just procrastinate, but with all your videos you are very concise and simplify it all, such a great guide series. And you also go over additional tips and suggestions for further intermediate and advance too. Thanks for providing these great videos!

You can take the drill bit out of the drill and give it a tap with your hammer once it’s in position. That should hold it in place and you can chuck it into the drill as it’s standing up there.
Also use a screw lube like ackempucky from Mcfeeleys to help drive the screw without any problems in hardwoods.
Good video!

Good video. I just learned how multi functional my 1/4" impact is. It's amazing. I bought mine just to work on my car. Watching numerous YouTube videos taught me that there are so many other uses for my impact. Amazing !

Nice work, Steve. Presenting simple intro videos in a clear, easily accessible way is giving a lot of value and instruction that is sadly lacking in many YouTube channels. There are so many fundamentals in diy (do it yourself) that are glossed over and not talked about. The attitude is "Ha, you should know that stuff already". You're to be congratulated for bringing a refreshing change.
How about 'how to use a spirit level', 'best glue/adhesive for different jobs', 'different abrasives and what they're for', 'how to cut a straight line with a circular saw'. The list is almost endless. Thanks, Steve.

So Steve, I need to drill a lag bolt( if this is advisable) into the narrow side of a wall stud, but I am afraid of weakening/breaking the stud. I am mounting a plywood “floor/shelf” to the back and side walls of the laundry closet to place the washer and dryer on. I plan to mount a 2x4 across the back and each side, screwing several 2.5 inch long 1/4 inch lag bolt through the 2x4s through the drywall and into the “narrow” side of the 2x4 wall studs. Probably 3 boltS on the shorter and 4 through the longer back wall braces.
I really REALLY appreciate your videos as they are very informative. I’m new to all this construction project stuff, as I always hired a contractor to do these projects in the past. I just can’t find anybody to take the job now, I guess they are so busy with building new homes and what not but nobody will take the job! Thanks again for all your help! Mark Smith
