Do Chickens Eat Meat?

Do chickens eat meat? To make sure your chickens are getting enough protein it's a good idea to feed them a meat based chicken food. You can also give them table scraps and during the summer let them free range to eat bugs.

Especially during the winter when there aren't many bugs you need to make sure your chickens get enough protein so they keep laying eggs and have healthy feathers.

Ive noticed that once you start to supplement meat to your flock that the egg yolks become darker and more rich in flavor! Delicious!

Meal worms are GREAT and GOOD for chickens and hens in the Winter also cook the used eggs shells smash them up and feed them back to them mixed with there other feed you give them. Thank you for the video I have kept and looked after chickens and hens since I was 15 and I'm 44 now. :)

These are good points. It got me thinking, if an animal is butchered, the unneeded organ meat could be frozen or dehydrated until the chickens need the protein. While the convenience of premade protein sources are great for those that want it, using up what was going to be thrown out would definitely be some great money savings! Also, I've heard of people raising black soldier fly larvae or having "maggot" buckets located somewhere in their chicken yards.

I know when I was stationed in Germany. The owner of the house we was living at had chickens. They asked us to save are table scrapes for there chickens.

good advise. I turn crumbles into to a mash by stirring in warm water, then add a small can of tuna packed tuna, they love it, yummy.

Great info....when the girls start molting in fall I but flock raiser with higher protein and mix it 1:1 with layer. I also ferment their feed to unlock nutrients. Got to watch cat food as it has higher salts content which is not good for the birds but works in a pinch👍

We took our grandson over to FW and went fishing. He had little hooks and caught some little fish. We brought the fish home, laid them outside on a piece of wood, cut them up and the chickens were grabbing pieces and running as we were cutting !! They Loved the fresh fish.

Hi Becky, great subject. I feed meat scraps, no canned or processed meats. I won't eat that garbage and if I feed it to my chickens then eat the eggs, I'm eating that garbage. Dog and cat food are in the same arena in my opinion.
Pumpkin seeds are full of protein too. Another abundant fall food that they love!
Mother Earth News had an article last year about natural supplimentation for your flock, worth the search.
Thanks for the video!

Hello, fish is a good option. Mine love canned sardines and canned mackerel. In cold weather sardines in oil provide extra calories.

When we had chickens, they ate their own eggs in winter, we also gave them all of the leftovers, they were soooo happy, I miss them so much..

Chickens will eat anything that didn't eat them first. I feed mine some dog or cat food.

In the winter, i like to give them some cooked steak (cooked with water and no oil) with some scrambled eggs (also cooked in water).
