It was the poster boy of the RAF at the time.
It's my step dad's favorite plane in WW2 and it's pretty high up there for me

The Spitfire Mk1 (used in BoB) had about 1000 bhp. Climb rate was 11.4 minutes to 20, 000 feet. About 1750 ft per minute (530 m per minute). They had eight .303 machine guns. 20mm cannons came after BoB. They had to fit two each side because a gun jam (common) did not throw the plane too far off target.

The Spitfire started life as a racing aircraft. It was converted to a fighting machine. The Hurricane started life as a Bi-plane and was modified to a single wing fighter aircraft .

One thing people overlook is that herman goering was insistent on having 109’s fly at bomber speed which made them much slower which is where the spitfire excelled instead of faster which is where the 109 is better. The low speed often left 109’s defenseless but in the fights where 109’s were at speed the spitfire’s almost always lost
