The Spitfire was Britain's best fighter that stayed in production from 1936 through to post war times. By 1942, the Spit IX was trouncing the FW 190s. It should be noted however that there were many hurdles along the way....
The construction of Castle Bromwich Factory, started in 1938 to build Spitfires was delayed by Lord Nuffield, who was finally fired in June 1940, after which production finally took off.
At the same time, the Spitfire III was being tested, achieving 400 mph. Unfortunately, the Ministry directed that the Merlin XX's be allocated to Hurricanes instead of the Spit Mk.III. As a result the Mk.V was produced with only a single speed, single stage supercharger.

Despite all of the attempts to submarine Spitfire production, Supermarine (with RR) prevailed with better and faster Spitfires throughout the war.
