A tariff is a tax because companies paying the tariffs will pass it on to the consumers in the form of higher prices.

We know how tariffs work. I work for a company that makes a consumer product that we've made in China for over 15 years. We have tried to find comparable quality manufacturing in the US but it is simply too expensive. So when the 25% Trump tariff kicked in we had to add the cost to our price. The product is still made in China and our manufacturer is getting paid the same, but our customers are paying 15% more. If Trump is elected, that tariff will go to 60% and, to make matters worse, the only possible means for us to conceivably move manufacturing to the US - by relying on migrant labor - will also disappear under Trump's immigration policy. So we'll have two choices: increase our prices again by over 20% and hope our customers can afford it, or shut down altogether. That is Trumponomics.

Before an income tax was established in 1913, the majority of funds given to the federal government derived from tariffs on domestic and international goods. 137 years without taxes and now we are taxed on just about everything.

Import tariffs are a b#*ch because domestic consumers end up paying more for imported products. Where existed a free and equal agreement on trade previously between two countries now highly sought products imported with high tariffs applied created a trade imbalance. In the past, auto and electronics imported from Japan also created a trade imbalance but instead of applying tariffs to those products, agreements were struck that benefitted both countries. It was agreed that Japanese cars could be imported and *assembled* in the US creating auto manufacturing jobs that had been lost to Japan because Americans simply lost confidence in domestically produced autos preferring the value inherent in the Japanese-made Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans. A similar story told in electronics particularly broadcast equipment.

No! This man is wrong. Tarifs are paid by the citizens of country imposing them, not on the foreign country

Protective tariffs are among the most widely used instruments of protectionism, along with import quotas and export quotas and other non-tariff barriers to trade.

Tariffs can be fixed (a constant sum per unit of imported goods or a percentage of the price) or variable (the amount varies according to the price). Taxing imports means people are less likely to buy them as they become more expensive.

It isn't Harris, it's history that would disagree with Donald Trump. Perhaps the unwanted presidential candidate Steve Forbes could send Trump some back issues of his dad's magazine on that. Obviously Trump didn't read them the first time round.
