What are the differences between Katana & Tachi? About naginata, tanto, wakizashi, & odachi!
*The content is based on personal studies and experience
There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects
Naginata has a curved bladeon the tip of a long handle, while the yari has a straight tip.
Naginata was mainly used from the Heian to the early Muromachi period when warriors were fighting duels on horseback, and Yari became more commonly used in battle from the late Muromachi period when warriors started to fight in groups on land.
Naginata was meant to swing around and slash to fight, but this was not suitable when people fought in groups, so that’s why the yari, mainly for stabbing (which doesn’t affect your allies) cbeame the mainstream.
By the way, the transition rfom individual duels o wars in groups ppened due to Japan xperiencing the Mongolian invasions.
