The Unexpected Country That Buys The Most Clothes

Out of all the countries, China buys the most total clothes by volume, mostly due to the fact that it has 1.5 Billion people.

However, it is not the country that spends on the most on clothes per capita.

This video looks at global fashion statistics compiled by Fashion United:

Surprisingly the US buys the most items of clothing per capita at 53, but because people are buying lower quality and less expensive items of clothing, the US is not the leader in clothes spending per capita.

Hi, I’m from Oslo, and I’m here to explain this phenomenon.
It’s quite simple really. Hot summers, cold winters, high prices

I'm from Norway and have bought 4 pieces of new clothing this year, because you can't buy pants second hand if you're fat 😅 So everything else than pants/shorts and underwear: I buy used. I have no idea what the rest of Norway is up to, that shocked me 😳

as someone from Oslo, I can attempt to explain: (1) EVERYTHING costs more here (bc high taxes and high salaries); (2) layering and cold weather clothes means more items and more cost per item; and, most importantly I'd like to think, (3) the average Norwegian shopper is trying to be more conscious about where their clothes are coming from, who makes them, and what they're made of, so quality clothes made of sustainable materials in an ethical and humane way cost more money.

and of course, thrifting is the most sustainable, ethical and eco-friendly way to dress yourself. spread the word!

If you ever visit Oslo, you'll know, why they spend that much.
This country is expensive as heck and Oslo oftentimes seems like a catwalk for designer clothing.

Meanwhile, I, a US native, buy maybe 3 items every other year, and I get them at Goodwill...

A documentary I saw said this: young people in Denmark, Sweden and Norway have large amounts of debt, that is accrued by buying luxury items. I don't remember the exact comparison, but It was said that no other country in Europe/the world (don't remember which) uses credit for luxury items as much as these do.

In Norway you seldomly have shorts weather, also everyone is into like 5different sports and especially outdoor clothing is extremely expensive there.

As a Brazilian, I can confirm that we are pretty efficient in wardrobe management

Scandinavian people are fairly outdoorsy. And we have 4 discernible seasons with long, cold winters and decently warm summers.

I have only bought 2 wearable items this year ( a necklace and a pair of foot shaped boots for spring/fall seasons). Will be buying 2 hoodies, new underwear and a hooded cloak later this year.

Me a norwegian watching this: hmmm i can see us taking first place.

Him: its norway! 🇳🇴
Me: *surprised pikachu face*

It makes sense though. The prices here are higher, we have money and we like to use it.

I live in similar weather conditions as in Norway. And I have to say that you need at least 1 pair of shoes and 1 piece of outwear for every 10 degrees, and temperature varies from -30 up to +30. Also you have to buy more expensive items that are made of waretproof and heatefficient materials that make you feel more comfortable outdoors.

Holy Diver 😆 bro I've been wearing the same 3 shirts and pants since 2020 started. I've replaced my shoes and bought a bag of socks twice since then.

It’s because of fashion and trends each season here in Norway. Also clothes are generally more expensive here because of the brands that are popular. Some use 1200 for one piece lol

I cant imagine spending anywhere near that much on clothing per decade, let alone per year! Crazy

But Norwegians only bought 3 items of clothing for that money: it’s hideously expensive there.

I saw that coming! Norwegian from Oslo here! Essentially, we’re the richest country so people often make more money than they really need. This also means the clothes are extremely expensive (as is everything else). Hope that helped !

It’s important to remember that Norway is super cold a lot of the year so that definitely is a major contributing factor
