Defining Hacker
There are many reasons why people hack. Some do it for fun, profit or to prove a point.
Hacking is simple enough that a 9 year old can do it.
Software Flaws / Updates
Are the prime reasons computers are compromised
Anti Virus
Protects against viruses
A virus is self replicating and tries to damage a computer
Anti Malware
Malware is software that's primary purpose is not to damage a computer
Malware generally tries to collect information about a user, or tries to force a user to visit sites or buy products.
Firewall
Hardware firewalls are built into routers
Software firewalls are installed onto your computer
"Security" Suites
Security Suites can be worse than hackers -- We have met the enemy and he is us.
Permissions
If you use an account other than ADMINISTRATOR or ROOT when you normally use your computer you will be more secure.
Site Advisors
Warn you if you are going to an "unsafe" site
Web Browsers
The Problem with Internet Explorer is that is does more than just browse the Internet.

I found your video when I did a "computer security" search for my Security Awareness class assignment. I am not a "beginning user" by any means but there are many areas of computer security that are very new to me. I learned a lot from your video and wanted to thank you. Not only can I complete my essay, I can now better protect my computer. This is my first semester back in college in....well, a long time. I signed up for Computer Programming, but the more I am learning about security the more intrigued I become by it. Thanks for a great, informative video!

You know Eli, I just realized that when you translate "Firewall" to Croatian (my mother tongue) it is "Sigurnosna stijena", when you translate that back to English it would mean"Security rock" :D

This vid was fun and informative to watch.
And Eli's warrior antics, were so much more entertaining,
than most AAA video games, and cheesy Hollywood movies.
Good tut!👍

Eli thank you so much for the lectures. They have been really helpful in my job search. You make it so easy to understand the world of IT and it vast world of acronyms...

For Linux it's fine... It should protect your linux server from infection, but it may not detect infections that will harm your windows PCs

One important note to add that was left out - do not open unknown or untrusted executable files

Excellent recommendations! I'd like to also add (because I've seen numerous clients do this) is to not install more than 1 antivirus or 1 firewall. Bad things happen! LOL
Don't mistake that for anti-malware or anti-spyware. 2 well known versions are wise to use as Eli recommends.

One of the best explanations seen, despite the hokey Viking bit. Thx.

QUESTION: In terms of NIDS monitoring for a small business network, what is the best option to monitor all the ports on a switch? Are there Cisco switches that let you have all of the ports being monitored by a single span port (perhaps a 10 GB span port)? Our current switch has mirroring (not span ports) and is limited to 4 full-duplex source ports monitored per destination port, which would require a lot of additional NICs and/or some type of aggregator. Are network taps the way to go (are there network taps that will monitor 24 ethernet ports at the same time)? Also, would something like Gigavue's visibility fabric and be a viable alternative? Thanks Eli (and/or internet peeps)!

Eli I scowered your videos for detailed firewall stuff, and it seems to be lacking..  I think a 2 part video  one going over firewall basics (types of firewalls, where to implement them, kind of stuff) and a second video on specific concepts / how to implement the specific concepts ( port forwarding, SNAT, Web filtering, VPN configuration, as you would have to do on a network based firewall ie: Watchguard / sonicwall custom computer software to run off of an old computer.) I love your videos they really go the extra distance in describing in depth detail on how things function, and how to implement various things.  I just believe that that kind of video would probably get a lot of hits :D I'm sure there is a lot you could teach me in this regard I look forward to hearing back from you.
