Required Cybersecurity Skill: Understanding Basic Networking Concepts

In this video, I'm taking it back to basics. I get asked ALL the time where to start to get into cybersecurity. Understanding how networking works at a fundamental level is critical. It is a required Cybersecurity Skill: Understanding Basic Networking Concepts If you don't know how computers are suppose to talk to each other, how do you know when they are doing it in a malicious way, or how to take advantage of weaknesses. The OSI stack is the model modern networks use and it is paramount to "get" it. I run through OSI, and give practical examples. Then I show you how to use Wireshark to visualize network traffic. It's less cyber this week, but just as important in your career.

TIMESTAMPS:
1:40 Why understanding networks is important
3:48 OSI Model
5:01 Transport layer
10:38 Network layer
17:18 Data Link Layer
22:54 RFC 1918 non-routable IP

I'm 32 with no degree and no prior experience in cyber security just getting my bearings on where to start my career (niche). Just wanted to say thanks for breaking the network down I found it extremely helpful and valuable any suggestions greatly appreciated thanks!

From my understanding of what you need to for networking for cybersecurity or security operations standpoint is the deployment of routers and switches, firewalls, SIEMs, NIDS, HIDS and network taps. How you set them up, placement or positioning of them, how they work within a business enviroment. This then raises the question how do you go about securing this business private LAN from the external network ? The deployment of HIPS, NIDS, or Stateful and Stateless firewalls and can you audit the network and identify any open ports using basic pentesting tools and understand their output alongside understanding of endpoint protection and soild of understanding of network traffic. Once you can understood this your pretty much nearly there.

Gerald what I really like about you, is you clarify "what you don't need to know" so many other instructors will tell you information that is helpful for the big picture but do not say "but you don't need to know X you need to know Y"

Thanks, is shows me where to focus my efforts and helps me understand my goal much better!

I'm subscribed! Watching this 37 min vid has given me the confidence now to approach my company to move into their cyber security division! I found you a few months ago and then my instructor at the university I'm attending for my masters in cybersecurity referred me to you! I like those referrals!!! Thank you so much for all your valuable content. Stay secure!!!

It’s always funny to listen to someone with so much knowledge trying to explain/teach it to others. It’s so much harder than some think. Like when I’m trying to teach my kid how to do a certain math problem, I’m like yeah it’s easy and then trying to break it down in learning terms is so much harder in some instances and making it understandable.

Dr. Auger is the best! My professor and still today a mentor I watch every Monday when you upload new vids. Networking was an area I always struggled to understand but I'm getting it. OSI and TCP/IP are awesome topics!

Hi Gerald! Your channel is truly a blessing for someone planning a career shift, so thank you! I'd like to ask you a few books you'd recommend studying for someone with no IT or cybersecurity background before even trying to get any certification. I'd like to invest my time in building a solid foundation in this amazing field.

Great job condensing the concept of neworking in less than an hour! On a minor note, at 13:59 when you explain about DNS, it is referred to as Domain Naming Services instead of Domain Naming System. Still, great video Gerald! Just like the other content you create such as the Daily Cyber Threat Brief on Simply Cyber. Your commitment to deliver quality cyber content is a gift to our industry :) Thank you!

Most likely subscribers w/ bell for notification may have seen this video in the first hour it was released and realized I uploaded the raw video for this video today by accident. This version is the final product. Sorry for any confusion!

In Q4 2023, I was laid off. My search for a new career path began and I chose the fantastic path of Cybersecurity which I had been tapping at a personal level for years. But as a manager, you tend to focus your attention to other aspects of the business and I want to move to a more technical area. Why I am saying this? What Gerry is saying is absolutely true. You need to understand how systems interconnect. I did my post graduate degree in 1999, yes a year before the big Y2K buzz and I created a router as one of my projects. I wish I could go back in time and grab that brain and bring it to the present. Oh how I miss that brain, 😂.
