The reason why the animals get their feet cut off in those things is because when they activate, they go absolutely ballistic and start spazzing out all over the place and next thing you know, they have death rolled their limb off.

it’s why it’s important to only secure the chain and not the actual trap. It will greatly reduce the risk of this happening.
