THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY 4K REVIEW - BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Review of the 4K box set of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Exceptional image quality on all three with The Dark Knight Rises being the pick of the bunch owing to about a third of the film being shot on 15/70mm IMAX and included in this as a slightly cropped 1.78:1 image as opposed to the anamorphic 35mm (and some VistaVision) for the rest of the film which is 2.40:1. The Dark Knight also has some IMAX scenes and done in the same format. Batman Begins was all shot in anamorphic 35mm with some Super 35, presumably for special effects shots that were then completed in a computer. Sound on all three films is remarkable and is DTS-HD 5.1. In all three cases, the 4K discs are perceptibly superior to the Blu-ray discs in this pack with the stand out feature being HDR again. This review includes an update to my review of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman and in particular the 35mm teaser trailer which has been to a lab for a 4K scan.

Appreciate this review👏 I went to see The Dark Knight at the IMAX in Waterloo when it first came out and it was breathtaking. It was also the only movie I’ve been to where the audience gave a standing ovation at the end, which was quite something. The IMAX experience was extraordinary and this 4K disc and audio is as close as we will ever get to that. The audio mix in the 4K disc is wonderful and I cannot fault the image quality

Thanks for the shout-out John and much obliged again for the very kind loan of the '89 trailer!

This channel has such class. Can't say I agree with you on the merits of most films, as you seem to like a lot of movies I don't, but your breakdowns of the technical aspects are just so engrossing and enjoyably presented. Look forward to all of them, weather I like the actual film or not.

They're such a solid trilogy & their transfers to 4K are equally as solid. My order of preference are in their release order - The first was a game changer in the Superhero genre that unfortunately turned into what Marvel is today, but it makes this Batman saga more special imo.

& good on you for helping out other YouTubers 👍

I agree with you. The Dark Knight Rises is the best of the DK trilogy.
And I much prefer the 1989 Tim Burton film. That was such a groundbreaking movie because it introduced us to modern era superhero films.

Saw The Dark Knight Rises at the Waterloo IMAX, the only time I’ve ever been, and I still remember it vividly, emblazoned in my visual memory. Living in rural Scotland has its benefits but the lack of an IMAX cinema is not one of them.

Wow, thank you so so very much for the shoutout, I have murder on the orient express on 4K coming in a few days so I will be sure to review that, I tried out DaVinci resolve and I think after 2 hours of tutorials, I have the hang of it. Thank you soo soo much for the shoutout, it really means a lot! I only own the dark knight on 4K but I will definitely buy the rest of the series to review in the future! thank you so soo much and hope you have an amazing rest of your day. Clark.

Another great video, John.
The Dark Knight for me was the first time I saw 70mm Imax in person and it was at the Imax in London's Waterloo...That first shot where you are flying towards the building where the bank robbers fire the hook out the window blew my mind, and it was the same for everyone as you heard an audible gasp from everyone in the theatre as it appeared on the screen..by the end of that opening bank robbery scene I just couldn't believe what I'd just seen. I wanted it played again and again as did many others too.
I did end up going back to see the film again not long after😁😁

Great review once again John! Glad to see you enjoyed all three of these films so much. If you enjoyed the imax sequences in these films, you should definitely check out the remastered version of Batman V Superman in 4K, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Both feature the original IMAX aspect ratios for home video and weren’t cropped, which makes it very interesting.

You know, I find it difficult to pick a favourite from the three films. They are each tonally different and bring their own differences to the story. This boxset is a delight and I simply treat the three films as one 7 and a half hour movie 👍🏽

I thought The Dark Knight Rises was great when I saw it at the cinema, but when I tried to rewatch it at home the plot holes and convoluted contrivences were very apparent and I struggled to get through it.

Batman Begins is the best of the trilogy in my opinion, but Keaton's 89 remains my favourite.
