If they wanted Casper to just be a fantastical creature, they should have called him "Casper the Friendly Spirit". It sounds more rooted in nature than ghost, and no one has to think about dead kids or ghost breeding.

Harvey Comics: why do you keep asking if Casper is dead?
Casper fans: because this what happens when you have a ghost character.

“How does ghost pregnancy work? I don’t know.”

Oh, Eddie, did your parents not give you the ghost bees and ghost birds talk?

I must admit Casper look good in that 1995 film. That part aged well

The "ghosts are some mythical magical being" thing also plagued Danny Phantom, where the creator, years after the show was cancelled, said the ghosts were never dead people.
there's a whole episode where a bullied kid in the 50s comes back as a ghost to haunt bullies, what are they talking about.

Honestly, even as a kid I always thought Casper was the ghost of a child that had died.
All kids know that ghosts come from people dying, so I don't understand why they were so against people knowing that in the first place 😂

I think Casper being a child who had sadly passed away is in my opinion a good thing because his passing can be a good way to teach kids about death

"You will never be as big of an incel as Casper the Friendly Ghost." - Eddache.
The laugh after it, matched my own.

The cutaway joke about the jarredness of talking about the mortality of a child while having a ball shaving sponsor ruined me way further than it probably should have.

As a kid, the fox becoming a ghost was more depressing than Casper talking about his own death. Is that wierd?

For me (I was like 13 when i first saw it) the death scene elevated the entire movie for me. First: I was so sick of 'it's for kids, it needs to be fun it needs to be happy' and second, it deepens the character of the fun loving casper immensly. The fun is not his true self, it's there to hide something: the truth, that he in fact is dead due to horrible happenings.

Then again, i remember watching watership down not too long before that and boy was that a funny little scene...

The problem with the claim by Harvey Comics is that part where Casper's dead pet fox comes back as a ghost. So he was clearly intended to be dead from the start.

I love how all the adults get all up in arms about Casper possibly being a traditional ghost when meanwhile us kids were always theorizing how did Casper die? How old was he when he died? How long as he been dead?

I remember Casper being a child victim of cancer being popular in my elementary school and ages usually ranged from 5 to 13.

So, fun fact. The pop culture references weren't actually off point for the writers of the film, Deanna Oliver and Sherri Stoner. The two had previous work, both as VOs and writers, on Animaniacs. Sherri voiced Slappy and wrote a lot on the show, while Deanna created and wrote a majority of the Chicken Boo sketches and voiced a character in the series once.

Fun fact: Casper (1995) was the first film to have a computer-generated character in a lead role

One of my favourite franchises is Monster High, and they tackle this kind of question in an interesting way. Some characters are just born as undead (Ghoulia is a zombie and was just born that way to zombie parents) while for others it is implied they did in fact die (Draculaura was turned in a vampire, Cleo was mummified)

I thought this was going to be more similar to a Game Theory “How did Casper REALLY die?”. But it was even better.
That idea of not treating the Ghost as dead people is the same thing that Butch Hartman changed in the last season of Danny Phantom, and it make all worst.

As a Ghostbusters fan who is looking forward to the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife I love the Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz cameo in the Casper movie.

It's always a blast when Eddie uploads. Of course my selfish brain wishes they where more frequent but the time, research and love put into these videos is definitely worth the wait

I might be in the minority, but i LOVE Casper's recount of how he died. It's jarring, but honestly the comedy makes the sadness of that scene much more powerful. As a kid it certainly didn't harm me at all. Just remember feeling sorry for Casper. When i rewatched later i appreciated that scene a lot more. The sequels sucked so bad. Remember as a kid really hating them. Yet i loved the first one.
