I like to imagine that since they’re biomechanical beings that are controlled by that mothership, that the mothership is essentially a cpu running all of the programs of each individual Chitauri. That’s why as the fight goes on and more Chitauri die, they become better and fight smarter, the cpu is clearing up space as the Chitauri die so it can run the remaining army more efficiently
