MONSTERS OF THE WEEK
ASHES 2063: A PERFECT MARRIAGE OF STALKER, FALLOUT & DOOM

#Ashes2063 #DoomMod #AshesReview #MonstersOfTheWeek

Ashes 2063 and its second chapter Afterglow is a 1-2-punch of Doom-Mod-Extravaganza. An open-ended, post-apocalyptic, first person shooter/immersive sim light that’s so deep in story, lore, interaction, and utterly fun, punchy and satisfying gameplay that it’s hard to believe it’s completely free and standalone, and made by just two people.
Genuinely one of the best shooters I’ve played in years, grab it at ModDB:

I've always loved when someone introduce friendly NPC's, dialogue and free roaming into a Doom engine game. Ever since the game Strife was released.

Ashes puts so many AAA, and AA games to shame. It has so much heart and atmosphere.

Been preaching the word of Ashes for years now. Always glad to see more people discover it!

The soundtrack honest to god carries the series on its back all alone - none of the locations would in my opinion be so incredibly atmospheric as they are if John S. Weekley didn't decide to make the hardest OST ever for a FREE DOOM MOD. Massive props to the guy and everyone who worked on the series. They made AAA games look like hackjobs made by people who've never seen a computer before (Which seems to be more and more the case these days).

My elevator pitch for both 2063 and Afterglow has always been as such: It's the "John Carpenter's : Mad Max" movie that we never got.

It blends that style of 80's sort of punk aesthetic that you see in Escape from New York, with the post apocalyptic of Mad Max, with all the gritty feel and music that comes with all of that. It's just a fantastic pair of games which ARE getting a 3rd entry at some point. Just lovingly hand crafted and with a lot of good twist and turns in the story. Especially when it comes to the A.I of the story. Let's just say that Athena isn't the *real* threat when it comes to the A.I of the story.

I just want to say ever since I watched your video on Baroque. I have been obsessed with older games, Roms, and game preservation. You have helped me find so many amazing games I would have never known about. So truly, thank you!

I played the first two releases during the pandemic. Outstanding game that outclasses most recent AAA efforts…and it’s made in the DOOM engine.

7:48 Correction, the Boneyard is only the name of level 2. It's not a settlement. The only place Scav was shown to live in 2063 is The Wall.

I can't think of a better example of why the game industry as a whole needs to stop endlessly seeking more visual fidelity and focus on art, sound, and mechanical design. This is what happens when experts in a game engine and its applicable genres focus on the bones and flesh of their game, instead of endlessly crafting the skin.

Not only is the speech well-captioned, but I _love_ the parenthesized audio descriptions. Always a treat when closed captions have that sprinkle of bonus flavour~

It's partly true that we're in a new dark age of PC gaming. But it really only seems to apply to AAA titles.

The indie devs and small operation modding industry has never been better.

Yeah, playing this is like being in a John Carpenter movie, and every second is awesome!

Ashes 2063 is truly 10/10 game. Great story, great atmosphere, awesome OST, gameplay is top notch and developers squeezed absolute maximum from the engine. I should give it another run.

I remember this one dialog with scavver in one of the hub-towns of ep2, after you carve your way through armies of raiders and hordes of mutants in the ep1.
I'm going to paraphrase but it went something like:

*scavenger looks at you, head to toe*
player: "Is something wrong:"
scavver: "Not really. I heard about some lonely scav that butchered army of raiders and horde of mutants back *_in location_* ? Do you happen to know him?"
player: "Huh? That's sounds crazy."
scavver: "Yeah, I think too. It's impossible for one man."

Also give try to Hedon if you didn't. Behind the cheesiness and smut of extrathicc muscle mommy characters is also great GZDoom game with great story, atmosphere, OST and gameplay.

This is the most creative game I’ve ever seen in a Doom mod. This definitely feels a lot like STALKER here. It’s incredible how these fans work so hard to make these mods from old game’s engine, and create something fun and original.

I honestly wish they could put this up on steam, just so I could buy it. I haven't played it yet and I feel like throwing some money at these devs.
This amount of effort and care deserves a worthy compensation.

I haven't even gotten around to playing Afterglow yet, but have been so thoroughly blown away by the perfection of the stand alone Ashes 2063 release that I am kinda saving it to play later, because phenomenal games are hard to come by. There is not at all enough attention being brought to this masterpiece of a game. It just oozes passion and perfection in every pixel and sound byte. This is the first time I feel the game has been described in a way that does it justice!
I skipped around this video to avoid hearing too much about Afterglow, but I think I can't hold myself back any longer. I need to play it, like now. Though, I have to say that It's been really fun going through 2063 in higher difficulties. The game is just so fun and rewarding to master. There isn't a single segment of the game that I had to replay that I became irritated with - it's just so much fun to challenge yourself in this game.

Honestly, with how good Ashes is, I hope that the team behind it go on to make more games.
