tl;dr: Wolves live in families when in nature. They form gangs when imprisoned.

WELL WELL WELL

"My book is wrong - don't buy it." Respect.

Getting the eyes opened can be a painful operation. "I was wrong all along" is one of the hardest phrases to say.

It turns out the concept of an alpha wolf was descended from a situation that was about as natural as studying sociology in prison.

Wolfs in the wild: A big family. Wolfs in captivity: The Mafia.

HUGE RESPECT for Mech for admitting the flaws of his original research and doing everything he can to correct himself.

People in prison do the same thing.

Imprisoned animals with limited resources have a "pecking order".

Their loyalty makes sense, in the case of dogs as well! You basically become the "parents" of your dog

Thank you, Anton Petrov, for taking the time to make this video clearing up these myths about alphas & dominance. Not only is it incredibly interesting (I'm a trainer & dog behavior nerd), but more importantly, these myths have been incredibly damaging to dogs even though this information has been available for decades, as you noted.

This has been known for a while. It’s a super common misconception, and it’s so accepted that when I’ve explained to people that it’s not true, they’ve called me an idiot because, “everyone knows it’s true”. Smh

Anton, your expansion into explaining science across multiple disciplines has been a highlight of my year. You are such a excellent teacher for all people to hear about ANY new research. Thank you for your continued work!

"Never cry Wolf" by Canadian Farley Mowat is about his experience studying arctic wolves in 1948-49 because of complaints of too many caribou were being killed. He only noted the family units with no hint of alpha, beta and omega characters. I read this book back in the 1960's as a kid. He found the caribou overkills from hunting by the visitors to the area and not from the Eskimos nor the wolves.

Anton needs a shirt that reads, “Do the wolfy thing.”
