Irish musician Hozier sits down with Zane Lowe for an in-depth conversation on the creative influences and songwriting process behind his third studio album, ’Unreal Unearth.'

Since his breakthrough hit "Take Me to Church", Hozier has continued to push himself lyrically, taking inspiration from literature, religion, and real world experiences in his personal life. Hozier shares that isolation allowed him to reset, clear his mind, and remove distractions in order to tap into a higher level of creativity and give him the momentum to pen the powerful tracks on this album. Hozier also discusses his relationship with Ireland, reflects on the success of "Take Me to Church", remembers Sinead O'Connor, and discusses spirituality more broadly.

When the pope visited Ireland a few years back Hozier joined a group of people who were protesting against the pope's visit, no fan-fare, just humbly turned up to support them. That's the measure of the man.

“it’s like you’ve been traveling the land for centuries” is exactly how hoziers music sounds

"I grew up swimming in waters that were made clearer by the work of Sinead O'Connor." "This phantom life sharpens like an image, it sharpens like a knife." So much wisdom and poetry in this interview ❤

If there is anything more beautifully poetic than Hozier's lyrics, it is the man himself.

Such a genuinely nice man had the pleasure of meeting him recently and was blown away by his humility, humour and patience, the new album is a masterpiece

Zane Lowe is the greatest musical artist interviewer. I have been waiting for this interview with Hozier, I am beyond satisfied with the quality of the question and amazed at how cultivated Zane proves himself to be one more time.

I've been on a Hozier interview binge since the new album came out and I really feel that this conversation stands out from the rest. The depth and humility in both of them is magnificent, I could listen for hours...

He saved me this summer, ngl. Deep diving into his references, I found a level of intrigue and almost childlike/obsessive curiosity I thought I’d never experience again - or that I could never spark into life again. And this facilitated a ripple effect. I feel like I’m late in getting to know his craft but the timing couldn’t have been more benefic. He’s so intentional. I understand now why he has moved so many. Great interview 💐

What a beautiful interview. So rich with ideas, so authentic. When he said '"I grew up swimming in waters that were made clearer by the work of Sinead O'Connor" I just cried - what better epitaph could an artist have?

Funny how everytime I hear Hozier speak whether through general conversation or song, I instantly find something happen within me, I get idea for new poems or I gain new something and my manner of speech changes and try to be better. Grateful, grateful.

How beautiful it is and lucky we are to live in such a time as this. This felt less like an interview and more like I was watching the most riveting conversation unfold at a dinner party. Exceptional stuff from both, who are so good at what they do.

If there was one artist who I would love to sit down with and have a extended conversation until the wee hours, it'd be Hozier. His mind must be a wonderous labyrinth to explore

“ Does it feel like its worth making in this moment, does it feel like it needs to be made ?
Yes
And do I find it beautiful?

Yes

Then it needs to be made

These two questions are the absolute north for me in the making of something ”

17:33 my mother was one of these babies. the void in our lives because of this has been massive, we didn’t even know we had any irish lineage until a handful of years ago. but it’s incredible how things come together because now we may be meeting her birth mother for the first time *at a hozier concert* next month?!
