JN.1, new COVID-19 variant, is fastest-growing strain in U.S.

JN.1 is the fastest-growing strain in the United States, according to the CDC. The variant first emerged in September and is descended from the Omicron subvariant, BA.2.86.

Officials say the variant could lead to an increase infections, however, there is no evidence that it causes more severe illness.
