Switch to 91 octane from Costco. Mine did this and 2 tanks later the noise was gone. Truck even idles smoother. I was about to take apart the valve covers and the noise
Went away. My guess is some sort of spark knock or cheap gas causing bad carbon build up.

Very common noise on these trucks. Nobody knows what causes it and doesnt seem to effect anything. Mine has had this noise for years but only whwn the engine is hot and its also hot outside. Mine wont make this noise in the winter, but will all summer.

The Intake Manifold Servos which are operated by the trucks computer and uses vacuum pressure. Have a mechanic/tech hook up a diagnostic computer and turn the servos ON/OFF while the engine RPMS are at 1500 - 2000. If the sound goes away when ON, that's the issue and you need to replace the Intake Manifold entirely. Only a couple hundred $ plus labor. If not, it's something else.

You can try adding a bottle of ceratec to the engine oil after a change. I did that with my 2021 mustang GT and the sound completely disappeared.

Its ur cam tensioner.
Open the engine oil cap while at idle.
A little oil splashes. No big deal.
On my truck I can see the tensioner popping up and down.
I suspect its a low oil pressure issue or an O - ring is bad in the tensioner assembly.
Probably a simple fix but will require 12hrs of labour.

Maybe bolts are getting loose to the flywheel and the flywheel is tapping

Lifter tick. Common in Ford modular engines. Im assuming you have high miles on it. If there is no damage to lifters, you might want to look at using the correct weight of oil if you are using a heavier oil than recommended by manufacturer this can be part of the problem. Also, might want to look at upgrading your oil pump to highr pressure and volume. Melling i think offers an upgrade.

If it only started making noise after the motor reached operating temperature, then it’s possibly a lubrication issue. At operating temperature is when the oil is at its thinnest. My 5.0 does the exact same thing. I’ve noticed that fresh oil quiets it down completely for a while. New 5w20 would keep it quiet for about 1k miles, 5w30 for 2k miles. I’m about to try a 5w40 or 0w40 to see if it’ll keep quiet for a full 5k oil change interval. If not, I’ll try 5w50 next (same oil Ford recommends for the racing 5.0 and 5.2 motors).

I have this same sound, but only after 20 minutes of running at operating temp. I have no idea what would cause that!
