Ninjask does shed it's shell when evolving... so leaving behind half of its defense kinda makes sense to me...

Fun fact: Shedinja also has 45 defense (not that it matters lol) like Ninjask, and added together they make 90 like Nincada. So you could assume Ninjask lost 45 defense specifically because of losing its former shell, Shedinja

Nincada, after evolving, splits in body and armor; armor turns into shedinja, and body turns into ninjask. That’s why ninjask and shedinja both have 1/2 of Nincada’s defense.

The earth crab thing looks to only have a small layer of clay, and a lot of loam/soil. Clay is the hard stuff. That's the stuff that gives you trouble while digging. Loam/soil is relatively easy to move through.

But have you ever tried to dig through a tree root? Now that's a challenge. Get out your hatchet. Maybe Leafeon is a tree root with leaves on it.
