Installing Garmin 93SV Fishfinder On Hobie Lynx with Over-The-Side Transducer Mount

I bought a Garmin93SV GT56 so that I could start building my history of waypoints on that instead of using my phone for Navionics. This is going to be a big learning curve since I have only ever used a Humminbird Helix7 that was kicked down to me from a fishing buddy because it couldn't do the maps, but I am really excited to not have to be constantly looking at my phone for contours and the screen for fish (and constantly worrying about charging my phone so it isn't dead when I need it for fish photos!), and just be able to do it all in one place. I'm also really looking forward to the option to "map" lakes on your own (although I still am not 100% sure what that entails), I have always been willing to put in the work with as much time on the water as I can manage, but now I feel like there will be a lasting payoff from that time instead of just relying on my somewhat imperfect memory!

My first challenge was how to switch out the Humminbird for the Garmin on my Hobie Lynx and the RAM over-the-side transducer mount I use. Yes, I know there is a nice recessed cavity on the Lynx for mounting a transducer, however since I have a great relationship with the Strictly Sail & Kayak shop, I have the opportunity to demo various kayaks, and I would like to be able to easily switch the transducer over if I decided I would like to try out something bigger like a Hobie Compass for my first trip on the Ohio River, or some scenario like that. I am also clueless when it comes to wiring and electrical stuff.. something that I am working to remedy because I feel strongly that I should be able to understand and repair all of my equipment on the road without needing someone to bail me out with help. I have a long way to go towards that goal, but I'm working on it!

So I stopped by the Strictly Sail & Kayak shop in Cincinnati, Ohio, and asked Brian Tacy to be my expert advisor on this install. It was perfect, he would set me on the correct path and let me do the work myself... right up to the actual wiring part where the power cord ended in two mysterious wires. He disappeared into the shop and reappeared moments later with a plug on the end and the wires all taped up. I really regret not getting to see that part or get it on video so I can study what he did, but he says it was a simple as stripping the wire ends bare, twisting them together, and applying electrical tape. He has promised me I can come up and video another install soon.

Subscribe to my GirlGoneFishing channel to follow my tournament season on the Buckeye Kayak Fishing Trail, the Cincinnati Kayak Fishing Trail, and this year I am adding in a few with the Kayak Anglers of North East Ohio, because I don't need much of an excuse to go back up to Erie East/West Harbors and the Portage Lake!

I also got a Yakattack mount round base and Switch blade transducer mount. I also had issues especially with the transducer mount. I should of gotten the Ram mount. I powered the Garmin Striker 4 Plus with a 10amp Nocqua sealed. It fits great in the round compartment. Mounted a 4" rail and quick connect on the lid. I'm ready this year Thanks for the vids , you'll love your Garmin!

Great I just installed that on my PA14 and got a second transducer for my big boat so I can use it on both. You will love it

With that heavy garmin, you might have to get a sturdy mount.

That's cool you will like the garmin. You can't go wrong with any of brands these days. I've been kayak fishing for almost 9yrs. Never owned any electronics. I did & still have a C-map gps contour map app on my phone. So I had mapping & waypoints. This past winter I finally broke down & got an echomap ultra 106sv on sale from bass pro for 752+ tax with my club points included. It was to good deal to pass up! Sense then I added the steady cast & lvs34 system. It's an awesome set up on my pa12-360. I see you got the newer echomap 93sv. That's good because it has much better screen resolution than older version. Those hadn't came out until after Christmas. Which I why I wanted the ultra for best screen resolution possible. No point in having high frequency within a screen that can show detail... You have an awesome set up for sure.i really like the lynx but haven't had chance to try one yet

Thanks for the video. That is my next Garmin with the GT56 Transducer. BPS is bad about putting them on sale and they have the old transducers. Good decision.

That's the same model I have in my sights when I upgrade.... did my homework on it and it's just a matter of time until I pull the trigger.😁

Got myself a Lynx just like this one. Didn’t plan on a fish finder unit, but things have changed.

Can’t be blind when everyone else can see everything.

But I’m wondering about the battery. Since there are so many here that have kayak experience, what is the best battery for the hobie Lynx that can power this unit?

Thanks 👍🏻
