Here is my rendition of "My Mother Told Me", from the show Vikings / popularized on YouTube in association with Assassin's Creed Valhalla (based on the poem from Egil's Saga). I absolutely loved the harmonies in this piece; thank you to those who recommended this song in the comment section!

I was listening to this when my wife asked me to go borrow a couple eggs from our neighbor…long story short, I have expanded our lands, and our neighbors home is now my own, we shall never want for eggs again.

Dang, are we going to reach 10k views on release day? I don’t think we’ve ever done that!

Edit: we did it! Thank you!! 🥰

I have an infant son, and discovered quite by accident that when he won't stop crying, this is the only thing that will calm him down and help me put him to sleep. Thank you for singing it this way, and thank you for posting it.

1.2K dislikes? Clearly their mothers never told them.

That voice. The pitch on point. That sound quality. Not just echoe all over the place. Simply exquisite.

Lyrics
My mother told me
Someday I would buy
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up on the prow
Noble barque I steer
Steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

My mother told me
Someday I would buy
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up on the prow
Noble barque I steer
Steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men
My mother told me

My mother told me
Someday I would buy (buy)
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shorеs

Stand up on the prow
Noble barque I steer
(Stеady) Steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

My mother told me
Someday I would buy (buy)
Galleys with good oars
Sail to distant shores

Stand up on the prow
Noble barque I steer
(Steady) Steady course to the haven
Hew many foe-men
Hew many foe-men

When Rachel doesn't upload often, so she adds 9 duplicates of herself in one video so we have enough for the rest of the month :bigbrain:

I can't count how many times I've listened to her sing over the years—maybe a hundred, maybe a thousand. Whenever I close my eyes, when things get tough, her song and face come to mind. Even though I've never met her, and never will, she was with me—in Mali, in Ukraine, in Poland, in Latvia. May the gods bless all the soldiers of good.

I am from Iceland. and Egill Skallagrímsson (the viking who wrote the original poem) is actually one of my ancestors.
Although I can't help butt feel like something is missing in the translation to english, I'll be damned if this isn't the most beautiful version I have ever heard of this song!

Thank you very much!

Now in Norse:

Þat mælti mín móðir
At mér skyldi kaupa
Fara á brott með víkingum

Fley ok fagrar árar
Fara á brott með víkingum
Fara á brott með víkingum

Stýra dýrum knerri
Standa upp í stapni

Stýra dýrum knerri
Halda svá til hafnar

Stýra dýrum knerri
Halda svá til hafnar

Höggva mann ok annan
Höggva mann ok annan

My mother told me has always been something I enjoy listening to, then I hear this and I remember why I listen to it. It transports you to a different world, one where Vikings exist, one where we don’t have to worry about taxes but rather what will be for supper, we live in such a different world and I wonder what it would be like to back and live a day like a Viking.
