HOW TO TRAIN A DOG THAT BARKS FOR ATTENTION

Excessive barking can be one of the biggest stressors in a dog owner’s relationship with their pup!

“What should I do if my pup is excessively barking?”

To accurately answer that question, you need to identify whom or what your pup is barking at, and more importantly, WHY.

Dogs usually begin to bark excessively for the following reasons:

- To gain your attention
- To assert dominance over animals or passersby
- Out of fear or uncertainty

If your dog is barking at you, he is almost certainly doing it for attention and/or control.

Here is a step-by-step checklist to follow in order to correct this issue:

1. If your pup continues to bark after telling him “No”, turn your back on your pup and ignore him until he stops barking.

He might continue to bark for a long time, so you NEED to be patient and give him the chance to correct himself!!!

2. Once he stops barking, give him a lot of attention, praise, and/or treats.

You want to make it a huge deal and show that he gets attention and praise by being CALM. This is so so important!

3. Repeat the whole process any time your dog barks at you until he stops using it as a means to gain your attention.

4. However, if your pup will NOT stop barking after following the first two steps, give him a short break in the crate or outside and then start over from the beginning until he stops barking.

When reading this step, some people initially may think “Why are you punishing him by putting him in the crate?”

Which is why I’m SUPER clear that this is NOT a punishment! Whether you put him in the crate or outside, it’s about HOW you do it. The purpose of this exercise is to make your dog understand that he does NOT earn the right to be with you if he’s misbehaving. Soon, your dog will begin to understand that good behavior is what gets your attention. Once your dog comes out of the crate or from outside, start from step 1 until your dog learns that the BEST way to get your attention is by behaving like a good boy.

This has worked so well for me. Instead of the crate we use the bathroom because he feels most comfortable in there. We are still working on it but he settles almost instantly now. It's a matter of consistency but I am definitely seeing improvement

hey Kaelin! Love your videos! I'd love to see a video on dogs that bark incessantly at dogs parks. There are a few dogs in our regular park that seem to not know how to ask to play or are maybe jealous of the attention they aren't getting; they just bark right in other dogs' faces and almost always some sort of fight ensues, even between other dogs they are just barking around and not even them. It seems so obvious to me that they are causing a lot of negative energy at the park, but these particular dog owners seem all but oblivious to it. They seem to either think that it's not a big deal or have no idea how to train them to NOT bark in other dogs faces, so they just let them bark non-stop and stress out all the other dogs! It's honestly nuts.

I have done this and our lil 70lb monster does it even outside. Her bark is so loud even louder outside. She often does it when she is tired like a toddler. Any phone/pc work meetings are impossible. Major early training but she seriously still has issues with barking. Her younger brother does not exhibit same behavior. She is now 2.

My dog barks for attention and we live in a condo so it is imperative it gets stopped. A house leash works like a charm but we don't normally reward him after we remove the leash. He is smart enough to keep barking to get on the leash, to behave, to get loose in order to GET the treat!

Any ideas for how to alleviate this issue when living in an apartment and with a dog who is not yet crate trained? I read/hear all the time to ignore the dog, but I can't exactly do that when it's 11pm with many neighbors in my building

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much, but he barks A LOT... So, leaving home is always a challenge for us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!

What if the dog barks the same when taken out of the area or situation where the behavior started?
Also, having 2 littermates, one barks for attention and continues when ignorned or taken out of the room and the other steals all toys esp the ones of the other dog. Any advice on the toy thief and when a dog doesn't stop even when taken out of the area?

My dog barks incessantly when left alone in the yard to go potty, in her crate during human meal time. And she’s begun scratching/ jumping on the window to come inside. Everything I’ve read says ignore until they’re quiet but the problem is not getting better. Help!

I am trying this method but with a larger dog it is much harder to whip them into the kennel. Mine is resistant after a couple times. When he has been barking, he doesnt feel compliant even for a treat that he loves. I am leaving a house leash on him today .

Okay so my dog barks when she is playing with her toys by her self. She barks and wiggles and wafts her tail and barks. I try the picking up method but she thinks I’m playing and runs away. I try removing myself and walking away from her but then she just plays on her own and barks. I run with her and we play outside and go to this hiking trail and she does not bark outside just insides I have no clue what to do.

Wow, I'll try it but I think she'll only be out of the crate for a second each time. 😆 Yes my 1yr old pit/mix is that bad😆

I’m watching my cousin’s dog who has separation anxiety and won’t stop barking. What should I do?

I got a dog from the animal shelter 5 days ago. She is a beautiful corgi dog but has seperation anxiety.
Every time we leave her alone at night she barks nonstop... and we are concerned about our neighbors. When we show up Infront of our dog the barking automatically stops.

If she keeps doing that than I will be forced to return her to the animal shelter. That will be sad but I have no choice.
Can you please advise on what I can do to stop her from barking.
I took her to the vet yesterday and he gave her some anxiety tablets for the night but that still never worked.
