Dr. Paula, like Flavius Josephus, seems not to know at all that a Praefectus like Pontius Pilate could legally issue sentences by himself alone in a - cognitio extra ordinem form-. Therefore, the accusation by Josephus that Pilate condemned people without trials does not make any sense.
In the case of Jesus, Pilate simply applied the ius gentium and the lex Julia in a *cognitio extra ordinem* manner, thus sentencing Jesus to death by mors agravata for the crime against *ius majestatis* (i. e. emperor Tiberius) and *seditio* against the Roman State.
