I love this scene!!! Thank you for the clip! Two smart and beautiful characters. Mary is rebellious in that period, rather pungent and tries to test him, but Matthew is intelligent and proves to be up to the challenge. I think this verbal confrontation is the beginning of a relationship that will soon become a great love!! (I apologize for my English)

It was often very difficult to like Mary because she wasn't just mean to newcomers like Matthew but often vicious with her immediate family, especially Edith. Which made it rather gratifying when Edith bagged a marquess despite Mary's efforts to prevent it.

Leí a alguien profundizar en esta escena, y recuerdo que decía: Miren como Mary dice que estuvo no leyendo sino ESTUDIANDO la historia de Andrómeda. En el post hablaban sobre cómo Mary era una nerd que le gustaba muchísimo leer libros y que siempre la podían ver en la banca a las afueras de Downton con un libro. Este post era sobre las similitudes que tenía con Matthew y que era muchísimo más de las que ella pensaba. Me gusta mucho esta escena porque es prueba de que ambos están al mismo nivel, y que Mary puede tener un temperamento cruel y vicioso cuando algo no le complace, es algo que amo de ella jajaja, pero que cuando lo usa para ofender a Matthew, este de algún modo le recuerda que está teniendo este tipo de actitud y se refrena.

Matthew saying Mary & him are not destined to be best friends reminded me of Monica saying Chandler isn't boyfriend material.
Well yeah, Chandler was "husband" material. Matthew & Mary were destined to be "lovers".
