Modi urges Zelensky to talk with Putin to end Ukraine war

Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv on a self-declared peace mission and urged President Zelensky to sit down for talks with Russia to end the war.

In the first visit by an Indian prime minister in modern Ukrainian history, Modi said he had come armed with a message of peace and called for talks between Kyiv and Moscow.

“The road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy. And we should move in that direction without wasting any time. Both sides should sit together to find a way out of this crisis,” Modi said on Friday.

One obvious flaw, since Putin invaded Ukraine he has demanded that Ukraine accept that Russia now owns the lands it has annexed and invaded (breaking the 1994 treaty that Russia signed to not attempt to change Ukraine's borders, its government and not to invade. Ukraine gave up the nuclear weapons it had in return. There were no other caveats, Ukraine was free to choose whatever path it decided).

Modi has asked Putin to make peace before but Putin ignored Modi, a slap in the face for India. However, India now gets Russian fossil fuels for almost half price (despite India predicted to be one of the worst affected by climate change). It's too good a deal for India at the moment for it to pass up and there are other considerations such as what it would do to Russian Chinese links.

So, instead Modi is used by Russian media as an example of a "friend" and the revenue from India goes to support Putin's invasion. This is despite Russia being only a small trade partner for India compared to the USA and Europe who are also (with Singapore), the biggest investors in India.
