The Birth of Islam: Muhammad and the Jews | The Jewish Story | Unpacked

- In 610 CE, Muhammad had revelatory visions in a cave in Medina, revelations that would later make up the Quran and the commandments of Islam. Meanwhile, the Jews of the Arabian Peninsula were finally living in relative safety after years of tortuous oppression by the Byzantine Christians.

Muhammad was forced to flee from Mecca to Medina, where Jewish tribes who had lived there for generations were more accepting of his monotheistic beliefs. In fact, Muhammad and his followers even adopted many Jewish customs. However, the Jews did not accept Muhammad’s claims to prophecy and things took a negative turn between the early Muslims and the Jews.

As Muhammad’s followers continued to conquer much of the Middle East and North Africa, the Jews in these lands were given “dhimmi” status. This meant that if they paid the annual tax and kept their heads down, they could generally live without fear. And while the system occasionally broke down, this relative freedom enabled a flourishing of Jewish thought and set the stage for some of Judaism’s most influential scholars and philosophers.

There were 13 banus (clans) of jews in Medina during Muhammad's time. Yet, only three (Nadhir, Qainuqa, and Quraidhah) of them that were expelled due to their treason and betrayal. It was political, not theological.

You forgot to mention that the Jews of Banu Qurayza committed treason during the 'Battle of the trench' and they themselves chose a Jewish convert to Islam to sentence them instead so he sentenced them according to their own scripture. Prophet Mohamed had no part to play in their sentencing. You conveniently forgot to mention that so I though I'd point it out.

I just love how you omit certain key details to fit your narrative that Islam is “evil” and Jews were “oppressed”.

You don’t mention the part where prophet Muhammad upon his arrival to Madinah, set the constitution of Madinah, the first of its kind that set the terms of coexistence between the Muslim community and the Jewish tribes in the city. One of the clauses in this agreement that was ratified by both parties was the agreement to mutual defence and to not conspire against one another with an invading force. In return, the Islamic establishment would respect their rights as equal members of society and their freedom of religion and protect their lives, property and dignity.
However in the battle of the trench when the Arabian tribes converged upon the Muslims in Madinah, Banu Qurayzah, one of the Jewish tribes openly reneged on their agreement with the Muslims and offered aid and support to the invading forces. They opened up the back of the city that was adjacent to their forts to the enemy and attacked the Muslims from behind the city while the Arabian confederation of tribes attacked from the front to box the Muslims in. Eventually after a long siege, the confederation broke up and scattered when they proved unsuccessful and the Muslims then turned back to deal with the Banu Qurayzah. For their treachery and violation of the treaty that stipulated that neither should side with another enemy and should come to one another’s aid, all the men of fighting age were executed, women and children enslaved (as was the customs in the world in that time in any religion and any empire) and their property confiscated.
And before you jump up, the sentencing was done by a Jewish rabbi at the time who sentenced them according to their own scripture.
If you’re going to tell the story, tell the full of it but don’t twist it to make the Jews seem like they are the victims of Muslims and they were blameless and innocent.

In Islamic jurisprudence, Jews are considered among the people of dhimmah, as they are located in Muslim lands under the protection and responsibility of the state like other citizens, and they are considered among the covenanters.and for khybar The immediate reason was that Muhammad had made a pact with the Jews of Khaybar, as he had done with the other Jews in Medina, but they had broken their pact with him by conspiring with the infidels of Quraysh and concluding an alliance to kill Muhammad and Expel his companions from the north of the peninsula to its south.

You neglected to mention the Golden Age of Jewish Literature happened under Islamic rule. Jews also fled to Muslin lands to escape persecution of Christedom. Jiziyah ( non Muslim tax) was not heavy either it was less then Zakat ( Obligatory tax on Muslims).

Many jews from madina converted to Islam ... and it wasn't treachery against the jews rather a Jewish tribe that broke the constitution of madina ... and the punishment for that tribe wasn't given by Mohammed but a Jewish tribe ... was it only jews who payed dimmi? Or anyone who wasn't Muslims...

Although I am a Christian by birth and by choice, The prophet Muhammad is a prophet from God. I had a religious vision where I went to Heaven and met Jesus and the disciples, the prophet Muhammad, many saints and philosophers that changed me greatly.

3:25 the incident of Banu Quraydah is supported by the Torah:

-Banu Quraydah betrayed, killed and wounded the Muslims after they made an agreement and treaty not to. All this happened during a war and the Jews switched side.
- the prophet never ordered it or carried it out himself.
- Banu Quraydah (Jews) chose the judge to judge this situation.
- This judge (sa’ad bin muadh- an ally of the Jews) judged that the mosaic law be applied to them. (Deuteronomy 20:10-20)

Banu Qurayza : A jewish clan residing in Medina that signed a pact together with other residence of Medina. Medina was under sieged at that time. They broke the pact by providing info to the enemy. They are punished for treason according to Mosaic Law by their Jewish arbiterary representative.

Prophet Muhammad was not the one who decided their fate.
