Actually Germany argued about invading Turkey. One general offered to hitler, to go trough turkey with 100 tanks or something like that and attack the soviets from the south, but Hitler denied. He sad something like: " If we go through Turkey, there will be no tanks left". Turkey was a exhausted and weak country to that time, but Hitler knew, that Turkey is always able to defend itself.

Fun fact, Chromium from Turkey was used to build German tanks, in fact when Turkey stopped supplying chromium towards the end of the war, it crippled Nazi tank production. Turkey remaining neutral and keeping supply of chromium was very important.
