Same reason Sweden was left alone. It was good to have for trade of important raw materials.

Logistics and geography. Finally someone is acknowledging that physical geography is a huge part of warfare. As well as logistics...

Turkey not getting drawn in to the war is probably one of the great diplomatic achievements of that era. Especially if you look at a map in 1942. Completely surrounded with Axis on one side, Soviets on the other and Allies in Syria and Iraq to the south.

turkey declared war on germany and also japan in February 1945 when allied victory was assured. this meant they got a seat at the united nations

Germany: Invading Turkey with its large standing army and formidable geography would've been a logistic nightmare
Also Germany: Invades USSR

One point which is perhaps overlooked: Today, control over the Middle East would be very attractive due to the oil fields. But in the 1940s these were not yet developped to a significant degree

Knowing a little about İsmet İnönü, the successor to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, he would’ve ramparted Istanbul, shut down Bosporus straights, and make sure the Germans never made it across the Dardanelles to Anatolia. He fought during the independence war in 1920, his country was not going anywhere.

I think germany saw what happened in gallipoli and said “im good, thanks”

I also imagine later experiences with the people of the Balkans didn't make it attractive. Stretching supply lines further away, through harsh terrain with some of the most effective Partisans in Europe sounds unfun, especially because it further thins out your available forces.

This is a well-known story in Turkey. At the time, Turkish President İsmet Pasha was losing sleep over the possibility of an invasion from both Germany and Russia. Turkey was militarily weak and lacked the resources to fight a major war. One night, his advisors woke him up urgently with breaking news: 'Germany has invaded Russia!'

For a moment, there was silence… then, suddenly, İsmet Pasha jumped out of bed and started dancing! The man was so relieved that his stress turned into a full-blown celebration.

Because there's no point in gaining access to the Black Sea when you already don't have any ship to use it anymore 😂.

Germany didnt really want to invade Greece but due to Italys failures with their invasion Germany had to step in. Germany didnt want to invade Yugoslavia either but due to the pro-Allies government they didnt want to risk a balkan front.

Invading turkey would also mean it falls into the allied camp giving the allies a land route to support turkey and another way into Europe

Nothing to gain, even invading turkey would’ve been hard after you clear European turkey, the Brits with the remnants of the Greek navy and whatever was on the med side of turkey’s navy would’ve been there

If they really wanted to invade the Middle East, going through Egypt would’ve been better but they didn’t have the capacity to do that anyway

Turkey had 23 divisions, one armoured brigade, 3 cavalry brigades having some medium tanks and tankettes in 1940s. Germany would have needed at least 25 divisions and a formidable air wing for close air support to push back Turks and to cover and control a large area which would drain their forces significantly.

There's a book called Windswept Lies of War, and it talks from censored history and hidden secrets to lost files and classified documents about World War II, it's the real deal.

Also we were partners in ww1 and we suffered from it also but you are mostly right. our leaders avoided any conflict which was smart at that time.
