Proven BJJ Competition Strategy against a Strong Wrestler

How do you deal with the Takedown aspect of a Wrestler who's in a Grappling competition? Or what do you do when someone's better at take downs?

As a Wrestler who got into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I can tell you that I used to put a lot of focus on takedowns.

When I would go to a BJJ competition. I would do everything I could in order to get on top of the person.

Oftentimes if someone pulled me into Guard it kind of sucked the wind out of my sails. I wouldn't have the points for getting the takedown and it took away my forward momentum.

In this video I respond to a question from Cassie who has a son, Ryan, who is competing in local superfight matches.

His matches have been going well but she's now noticing that the area gyms are offering more wrestling in their BJJ training. And their gym does not offer it.

The question from them is how do you approach a situation in a competition when your opponent has superior takedowns.

Chad and I both show options as to how we deal with this situation in BJJ tournaments or competitions.

The main idea is to converse your energy on the feet and save it for once you get to the ground. In my case I use a Guard Pull into Half Guard for the sweep.

But I'll save the details and let you see them in the video. :)

Hope the video is useful!

I'd love to watch you and Chad do a 5 or 8 minute roll sometime. You guys are both so great.

Great video. I see so many Jiu Jitsu guys try to waste time on the feet and go for takedowns against a wrestler.

An interesting companion video would be techniques to use again a judoka? It'd be interesting hearing your perspective on judo-style takedowns as a wrestling/BBJ guy.

Chewy That small detail of hooking the outside leg at 4:15 was like a light bulb. I watched this video this morning and went to the gym and swept two guys because of it. It's such a great tool not get flattened out in half guard. I noticed you were using it in the other video of you and the Big College Wrestler. Thanks!

That grip at 3:48. From a wrestling perspective lock your hands jack up the undertook and pull his face to your chest keeping your elbows tight. Circle towards the underhook; heavyweight headlock it’ll put you in side control

This is so important for certain areas of the USA. In my area, wrestling may not be as big as football but it’s still a big thing so a lot of people in my area have grappling knowledge and you do have to adapt to what you are likely going to face most. It’s in fact so popular that at least half of those in the classes I go to wrestled in school, myself included.

Why compare styles? Styles divide... What the real question is, is how do i become the best grappler i can be? Free of limitations from a set way. After all your just moving your body, so lets figure out the path of least resistance to the end game.

Got to be careful wrestlers know about head placement and will make you fight for it.

I would be very impressed at a BJJ grappler who manages to get a tight over the neck collar tie, a deep underhook, and head position on a good wrestler. No wrestler is going to give that position away without a fight. Not saying it can’t be done but if they are any good at all it won’t be easy to get.

We just had a d3 wrestler start today and he was super easy to handle because he was top heavy in just about every position. So he got taken to sweep city but I know he has the makings of a beast

A good wrestler won't tie up like that. We'll hand fight hand fight hand fight to means of an opening
