Shaurn Thomas was wrongfully convicted of participating in a murder and sentenced to life in prison. He steadfastly maintained that he was not guilty, and the Pennsylvania Innocence Project took on his case. After serving 24 years, a lost police file was located and he was finally exonerated and released. However, while you might expect that he would be fairly compensated or be able to sue the government, the truth is that many wrongfully convicted people don’t receive adequate compensation - if they get any at all. Without much money, prisoners finding themselves suddenly free when their conviction is overturned may struggle to re-enter society. There’s often no programs to help them. Enter Jon Eldan, whose nonprofit organization After Innocence is helping exonerees get health care, legal services, and social services and advocating for just compensation laws for prisoners whose wrongful convictions are dismissed.
