Ontario colleges see 50% drop in international students after cap imposed

The Ontario government and its public colleges are both sounding the alarm over an impending labour shortage as the impact of a cap on international students begins to bite in the province’s post-secondary sector.

At the beginning of the year, as part of a plan to cut the number of temporary residents, the Trudeau government brought in a strict cap on the number of international students colleges and universities could accept.

While Ontario’s 44 post-secondary institutions continue to study the impacts of the reduction, colleges say the volume of students has already dropped after the initial cut in enrolment.

Colin D'Mello has more.

If colleges and universities can’t figure out how to run a business that’s their problem. The CEO’s don’t need a 7 figure salary fit doing nothing. It should be more than 50% drop.

50% not enough. Make schools more affordable for Canadians

Good! We need to value quality over quantity. International students are largely "quantity" and very few of them end up being "quality" after they get their university degree

A good start! Now let's bring it down to zero percent!

As immigrant-origin person who came to this country 20 years ago as a student, this is welcome news. There should be a law imposing a cap on how many students Colleges can admit - a max of 10 - 20%. There needs to be a crackdown on diploma mills to shut them down. Instead of providing quality affordable education, the whole system has become a business. Could not care any less about them complaining of "labor shortages".

50% sounds like a lot but then you realize that Canada had a record high number of International students in 2023. 600K! That is a huge amount! The UK which has double our population also had around 600k! Our country simply cannot withstand that many international students especially when the large majority of them have the goal of becoming permanent residents!

Canadians first, period. Any educational institution that cannot abide by that, should not be in operation. Today, colleges and universities are taking students money and not providing any careers to Canadians. Stem Fields have become automated and other departments. 90% of graduates get low skilled jobs.

This is such a pile of crock, the problem is simple…. All international students cannot afford to stay here and go to school because of the cost of living and high rental. But, this is a good thing because maybe now citizens can have more of a chance to get a job…we have to high of number of immigrants and it’s forced citizens not to have children which means the government sets traps for international students to learn here and become citizens or tax payers

Only the top 40-50 colleges or universities should allow international students, and shouldn’t exceed 20% international student enrolment. Anything else is greed and a severe dilution of student and educational quality in this country.

Good. Let me know when we get to 100% drop. That would make me happy

How about these college focus on recruiting actual local Canadian students and improving the quality of education. instead of focusing on international students to top up their profits.

Besides higher English requirements, Canada 🇨🇦 also needs to check for national security risks.
- Many Chinese students don't come to Canada to study,
but to grab Canadian intellectual properties and
to *launder corrupt money by buying up big houses.*
