Zhao was the leader of the Fire Nation Navy for a brief period in early 100 AG. During his career, he held the ranks of lieutenant, captain, commander, and finally admiral. He was trained by Jeong Jeong to become a master firebender and, as one of the most powerful men in the Fire Nation, took it upon himself to capture Avatar Aang, thus becoming a rival of Prince Zuko. Zhao was a major enemy of Team Avatar in most of the events leading up to his siege of the Northern Water Tribe, during which he killed the Moon Spirit at the Spirit Oasis. This resulted in his downfall by a vengeful La, who subsequently condemned Zhao to spend eternity in the Fog of Lost Souls in the Spirit World.

Avatar has such well written characters, even if you like or dislike the character

I get why people forget Zhao, but he played his role very well. He embodies the fire nation's direction as a whole perfectly, along with showing how the ambition of the fire nation dehumanizes outsiders and has no consideration for consequences.

He also serves as a fantastic extension of Ozai's will, and even gives us a glimpse into Zuko's relationship with Ozai before Ozai even makes his first appearance.

He was intelligent, strategic, arrogant, ambitious, sneaky, dominant, undisciplined, narcissistic, tragic and underrated.

I always thought it was a little odd that nobody remembered him…I mean, I get the poetic justice, but although he was not victorious he still sieged an important capital and nearly conquered it. In our world stuff like that tend to be remembered, we did not forgot general Lee, or general Paulus at Stalingrad just because they ultimately failed...

Zhao could have been the fire nation's hero. He captured the Avatar, destroyed dangerous documents in the spirit library, killed the moon spirit and almost invaded the northern water tribe.

After Zhao insulted zuko calling him a "banished prince" I bet iroh entered the spirit world and told him "now here is that 10 fold I promised" and made sure he got banished for all of eternity, Completely forgotten.

I think he the only one that almost make Uncle Iroh Angry and use his firebend with angry emotion when he kill the Moon Spirit
