Can we just talk about how dark this is? He didn't even get to die. He got sentenced to just slowly rot in his own madness for all eternity

When you realize the Ocean's spirit punishment for him wasn't simply death, but banishing him to the fog so he would suffer.

Keep in mind folks, Zhao never died. He’s still alive in the spirit world.

That’s a punishment far worst than death.

The most messed up part was that, he was there for maybe 50+ years just lost in the mist and constantly looking a way to escape. He has suffered fate worst than death being he is in the spirit realm.

This only makes me think how he would react meeting Zuko in old age, realizing he was the firelord for a long time.

The fact that Zhao's been in there for decades and still has complete focus on his mission, while Aang's kids start to lose themselves within a matter of hours, speaks volumes of the sheer willpower Zhao has.

Damn! Even Aang and Katara didn't tell their children about Zhao, The guy wanted to be remembered but his name has totally been erased from history.

Saddest part is Zhao isn't even a footnote in history.

What's really sad is that he was never supposed to get the Avatar. He only did it to piss off Zuko and look where it got him. Best comeuppance ever.

It's a little sad, though, that there's a chance he started repeating those words in an effort to never forget himself. To stay sane. Just like how Tenzin had to eventually keep repeating who he is to clear the fog.
But Zhao's self delusion of his importance only ended up making it worse.

this also kind of gives Aang’s kids a perspective on how the fire nation and life was like around Aang’s time which is pretty cool but dark at the same time.

The fact that Jason Issacs came back to do this further establishes how epic and understanding of his character this was, and that Zhao had never change. Stuck in this hellhole forever.

It's kinda funny how his fate is worse than even Azula and Ozai's despite him just working for them.
