I'm not a Vikings expert but from what I've heard, this is based on a real person, whose story became popular in the region, then "inspired" Shakespeare. Regardless of story, I'm here for anything Eggers films– the man is a visionary. I'm glad he keeps doing his own thing and not trapping himself into big studio politics, while making unique but accessible films. Thanks for the review!

"This is a sort of reimaging of Hamlet...but this is set in more norse environment". No, Shakespears Hamlet is infact based on Amleths story, which is way older. The stories are not identical but the fact remains.

I saw The Northman a couple of days ago. It was very good. Beautiful cinematography making use of the landscapes. I'd rate it 4.5 out of 5 norse gods.

Even though it wasn’t my favorite from him, Eggers is just so damn good at creating this fantastical and twisted folktale worlds. Hope his version of Nosferatu gets made. Great review as always!

the legend of amleth came first not hamlet. if you look, shakespeare just moved the h for his character’s name lol. i saw this last night and it was absolutely brilliant. i didn’t go into this thinking it would be 100% action so i was fine with the slower storytelling at times, i preferred it honestly. the action when there was insane and shocking. i’ve no notes, this was amazing. 10/10.

By FAR Eggars' best film to date. A TRUE cinematic masterpiece!

One minor nitpick. This story isn't like Hamlet. Hamlet is like this story. The story of Amleth, which this movie partially tells, predates Shakespeare's Hamlet by 500 years and was a direct influence on him when he penned Hamlet.

Correction, this is not a reimagining of Hamlet. The Northman is the Norwegian Viking legend that Hamlet was based on.

Oh, to answer your question about good revenge movies… “ Man on Fire”, “ Sicario” ( I LOVED THE SCENE WITH BENICIO DEL TORO! He actually had me rooting for him. Yes, some innocent people died, too. But… His family was innocent, too.) and…” The Princess Bride”, NOTHING BETTER THAN MAKING A COWARD BEG AND KILLING HIM ANYWAY). Sorry, I got a little excited, but I hate bullies. Thank you again.

Hamlet came from the Amleth saga, because Willy boy liked taking older stories and myths and making his plays out of them, like he created them.
