Götheborg of Sweden is a sailing replica of the Swedish East Indiaman Götheborg I, launched in 1738 (not to be confused with the larger Götheborg II built some decades later). All sailors survived[6] when the original ship sank off Gothenburg, Sweden, on 12 September 1745, while approaching the harbour on her return from a third voyage to China. Construction of the replica started in 1995, with the hull launched in 2003, and the rig fully tested for the first time in 2005. Much of the time was spent researching how to rebuild the replica. In 2008, Götheborg completed the first Baltic Sea Tour. It is the world's largest operational wooden sailing ship.

My great great grandparents were sail makers for these big ships.

Those old ship designers really knew what they were doing. I tried making a large sailing model of a galleon when I was younger - they don't scale down so well. So much lead was needed in the hold to keep it upright in a moderate breeze that it kept sinking. Learnt later that other modellers use a deep detachable lead keel...

We have one here in the US call the USS Constitution aka Old Iorn Sides. When I was in the 5th grade some 40 years ago, we took a tour of it. It sits in Boston Harbor.

Imagine the weight of all the masts, rigging and sails....the weight above decks must be truly staggering....

How did they keep those ropes from going dry and how did they keep them from getting tangled ?? Magnificent ship but I wonder how sea sick people would get onboard ?

I nearly sighed on of them in Shoreham Harbour, but realised it was going to Falkland islands, I was running from the CSA aahhaa changed mind ended in S Ireland, who has looked after me, just to let megbin knows nothing about women, or may be white women
