RTX 3080 12GB Review - Disappointing Performance?

The drivers are finally here. The performance figures are finally here. We can now show you exactly what the RTX 3080 12GB GPU is all about and more importantly, how it performs and while on paper, it may seem good, I'll let you draw your own conclusions based on the results. Let's do this!

It's worth noting that AC Valhalla seems to have mixed results depending on the driver used.

It's like driving along on the highway. If you leave just enough space between you and the guy in front of you, someone's gonna think, "hey there's enough room for me over there" and cut you off. Nvidia saw that miniscule performance gap between the 3080 and 3080 Ti and swooped right into the space.

What I'm seeing with the results, is that Nvidia basically still felt bad about having to ship 1 or 2 3080's for 700$ once a month when bestbuy has a drop after they made the 3080 ti, so they just re-launched the 3080 ti/3080 Super and called it a 3080, so the chip would have to be catastrophically binned to be shipped as a 700$ card. First it's gonna be a 3090 ti, then 3090, then 3080 ti, then 3080 Super, then finally, if it lives that long, a 3080. Keeping the same name as well will allow them to launch the 4080 for 1000$ or 1200$ and say, "see, twice the performance of the 3080, for less money."

The 3080 12gb is basically what the 3080 10gb should have been. The 3080ti should not have existed. While the 3090ti is what the 3090 should have been. Nvidia making these new GPU’s is not the problem it’s them giving us the inferior versions at the start then making these versions in this market place along with Lovelace and RNDA3 on the rise this year.

Nvidia wants to sell 3080s for $1000 and have consumers accept it as the normal price. Thats why they created this card. Likewise they want to sell the 4080 for $1000.

And may I ask that all the 3080, 3080 12G and 3080Ti are set at the same TGP? They are all suprim X so they are all 400W cards?

I wonder if Far Cry 6's HD textures work well with this because on the regular 3080 it swaps some textures with very low-res versions in random places through the map. That game was well optimized for AMD to require 11 GB of VRAM just to make the 3080 seem outdated.

The msrp is literally 70% higher than the original 3080 that they basically never restocked. What a joke they are.

I don't see the problem with this, at all. The 12GB is at least halfway between the 3080 and the ti, and the same with the price. If you are planning on 4k gaming with high textures then the extra 2gb alone might be worth it. Of course the difference between all three of them is minimal, but it probably just means that you can tweak a few extra settings.

Just out of curiosity did you use your old benchmark results from the regular 3080 and 3080 ti or did you run them again with the new driver that was released with the “new” 3080 because it could honestly be all driver.

Comparing the performance, the 12gb and the ti perform about the same. It's not really worth it since there really is no change. On top of that the price is insane.

The power draw section. Is that GPU power or total system draw? Seems a bit high given the TDP of 400W. Did you update the vBIOS or play with power limits?

I'm far overdue an upgrade, but I'll wait and see what the new G CPUs from AMD will manage. Built a rig with a 5 series for my son, and it manages all games remarkably well.

I might just have to ignore standalone GPUs from now on, which is a fairly scary thought

Prices are awful on them evga 1250 and up and asus tuf seem to be 1700 plus and the strix seems to be 1800ish converting to usd.
