We Saved $4000 Building Our Own Fence with Lumber We Milled

We are finally building a fence for our backyard on our 5-acre property! Paying to have a new fence built is expensive! So we built one ourselves. This has been on the to-do list for a while now and what better time to do it with a baby on the way and in the southern Alabama summer heat. We saved so much money milling our own lumber for this project and couldn't be happier with the results. More Details about the overall costs are pinned in the comment section.

Incredibly grateful to have a dad that taught us practical skills growing up and is here to help us put this fence up on our property. It's so important we pass this knowledge down to our children and be patient with them so that they can learn and retain these valuable skillsets.

Fence Cost Details for those interested: Roughly 250ft of fence

4x4x8 Fence Posts- $282
2x4x8 Braces- $43
80lb Bags of Concrete- $201
330ft Roll of Wire- $210
Fasteners- $30
Decorative Caps- $90
Milling the lumber- $20 in fuel and blade wear (Maybe 6 hours of milling) (Approximately $700-$1000 at the store depending on type)

Cost- $876 ($3.50 / LFT) Saved over $4000 from paying a contractor.

I love that you grew up helping your dad and now he is helping you. One day your little one will be doing the same.

As a fellow southerner in the midst of a bunch of outdoor work, I hear ya. The heat came on fast this year. It feels so, anyway. The fence looks great. Adds a whole new visual dynamic to the back yard.

That fence looks good enough to keep both the dogs and the kids at home.

Great job! We complain when it gets 80 here in Washington. Always great to have the Pops around. Miss mine everyday when his voice comes into my head “Are you going to use the right tool or what is in your hand?”

My Dad used to say no job is hard if you have the right tools. That post hole digger and concrete mixer takes away an entire day of work if not more.

So happy you are getting several projects done before the little Woodbrew arrives! Your lives will never be the same, in a good way. A big thanks to your Dad, Pops, for helping-out! Summers in Alabama are brutal...as they are here in Texas. But, we love we wouldn't be where we are, right? Stay cool and enjoy the new fence (which by the way, is awesome) and pool! ✨🥰😍❤👏👍

I had the pleasure of working with my Dad, that was in the Cinema Industry here in the UK. Seeing you and your Dad working together was awesome, you make a great team. Molly did her part too but with those temperatures she sure had to keep cool. That fence is a great piece of craftsmanship for sure, love how you have used the boards Top and Bottom. Sending Best Wishes and Love to you both and as we say here in the UK 🇬🇧 The Bump ❤️💙xxx

My relatives are all from Mississippi and Louisiana where my parents were born. When we would visit is was always so difficult to visit because of the humidity. I was raised in the Texas Panhandle where I still live. It is extremely dry, considered an Arid climit. Very windy nearly all the time. Our temperatures in the summer run around 90 to 105, we have one wet month, end of March to mid April. We have snow ice and blizzards in winter. Fall starts in October with our first freeze. We can still get a freeze, snow or ice in April then June starts summer with 90 degrees. We usually miss spring weather all together. I feel sorry for you about the humidity. In the summer and most of the winter we run a humidifier in our home just to be able to breath with out coughing from the air being so dry. We all get acculamated to where we live and going some place completely different can be difficult. Our area is very flat, dirt and dust storms often. No forest or trees unless someone has planted them around their home. You can see for miles and miles in all directions. I loved going to see my Grandmother in mississippi with all the trees and hills, red dirt around, It was so different from where I lived. Rain showers almost every afternoon.

Fence turned out great! If it not straight with your eye 👁 then it’s not straight! Lol yeah you are right. Just had posts put in for a deck and them posts were not straight with my eye! Uhh! String was ran too. Good tip on the string tightening! 👍
