Romario is one of the greatest goal scorers in the history. Arguably the 2nd greatest Brazilian footballer of all time and pioneered a different path for his fellow countrymen. The man who would take thew torch from Pele and bring his country to glory - while also passing that same torch and mentoring his successor - Ronaldo. Just how good was Romario really? Like most Americans, I was really not a fan of football when the World Cup came to America in 1994, but I had a Dutch girlfriend so I watched the tournament to follow the Oranje learn more about the world's game. When I saw Ramario and Bebeto shredding defenses with moves that I didn't know were even possible on a football pitch, I was amazed. Holy shit! Romario turned me on to football almost 30 years ago and for that I am in his debt. And I am still married to the Dutch girl. 🙂

He's mostly underrated from europeans, a lot of brazilians (I'm one of them lol) touts him as the greatest striker of all time. He left Europe at his peak, out of his own accord, just because he wanted to be with his friends and family. He's unmatched inside of the box.

Fun Fact: The greatest german goal keeper Oliver Khan said that Romario was the scariest striker he has ever seen.

He is the reason that I became the die-hard supporter of Brazil! His partnership with Bebeto just took my heart away! Love from Nepal!!

Played with Romario in USL for Miami FC when he was 40+. Would walk around the whole time and stand off side. We played against a buddy of mine who was told to mark Romario. After the game he said it was the easiest game he ever played. He didn’t have to run because Romario would just stand there all game. Romario ended the game with 2 goals. Absolute legend. 😂😂

The best performance of his career the video doesn’t show. Brazil was about to be left out of the Word Cup, had to win over Uruguay in Rio, he wasn’t playing the last games over personal problems with the team staff, but at the last moment they called him to play this game for obvious reasons. That game is known for having one of the best performances in history of football. He dominated the game scoring two goals and saved Brazil from being out of the World Cup.
And then won the damn tournament. A legend

The most dangerous player I have ever seen live. Saw him play in a friendly against Honduras in 94. Scored in the first minute and every time he touched the ball the anticipation in the air was like electricity as we are all waiting him to score again (he did about a half hour later). They subbed him out early but was so grateful to see him live.

Definitely underrated by most soccer fans, thank you for the video!

Dutch pundits to this day still mention Romario when listing the all time great strikers. They will say things like: "He may be good, but he isn't Romario". He definitely made a great impact in those 4 years.

In 2000, when HE WAS 34, he scored 72 goals in a season for Vasco do Gama. Simply incredible!

Unmatched speed and technical skill, while never panicking in front of the opponent's goal. The best attacker in football ever.

He was superb, and made it look so easy. The highest compliment I can pay him is he reminded me of Maradona in certain ways…his low centre of gravity, his movement and finishing prowess. Brilliant player.

Story time: I was 8 or 9, my dad took me to watch a game, Romário was playing for Vasco at the time, I was so excited to see him play. He got a red card in the first minute of the game. We travelled 300km to watch him play. Also, Romário claims to have scored 1000+ goals in his career, btw. Great video man

Imagine Romario playing now in this era of social media and all the money in football....this guy would of been a social media monster!! I loved the way he played the game and scoring goals that left you breathless, along with the great late Maradonna (R.I.P) my two fav players, of all time.

Some great players dribble, but Romario just floated through central defenses. Such elegance, such balance, combined with speed and unmatched composure. Effortless and efficient. What is unique about him is how he used every part of his feet to finish, and almost always made the correct choice. Especially his toepoke is amazing. 4:40 is a prime example.

He was literally scary good.

He is the reason the Ballon d'Or started presenting awards to non-European footballers as of 1995.

Here in Brazil, if you ask "Romário or Ronaldo?" you will get 50-50.

My favourite non United striker of all time. He was the first striker I saw as a kid and thought he was from another planet. Absolutely devastating. Mad mad player
