The elevator shaft is likely due to Versus mode where you can play as the infected :)

1:02 Fun little bit of trivia for this "collect all 10!" detail: This is actually a joke about the cancelled 10th class for the original Team Fortress, the Civilian.

The elevator shaft is probably fully modeled to help support VS mode play, to provide in-world navigation for the infected.

The reason the newspaper has Breen on it is because that model was originally made for Half Life 2 but was used as just a generic newspaper in pretty much all the other source games. You can find it in CS: Source, for example

Most source engine games from after the orange box use combined models for both the viewmodel and world model as opposed to separate ones like in Half-Life 2, Portal, Counter-Strike Source, and the 2007 version of Team Fortress 2. Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, as far as I recall, use combined models, which is why you can make out words on guns that other players are carrying, for instance. As far as the molotov goes, the interior stuff *is* liquid. They probably set the material to be opaque later on in development either for performance reasons or because transparent textures tend to be buggy. While Valve is also known for making elevator shafts for no reason (Portal, ) the Left 4 Dead one is fully modeled for Versus mode. The newspaper is just lifted directly from Half-Life 2, hence Dr Breen. I believe you can also see mentions of the 7 hour war on that model.

The stamp on that gun is actually 1911 A1 and is pronounced more like "nineteen eleven a one"

The A1 model is an iteration of the original design with some improvements that came out later in 1926

I really like that the model of the helicopter pilot looks a bit infected since he's said to have turned into a zombie mid flight in another stage.

I'm surprised you left out that the Menu Screen is a loadable level in the game.

It's just the first level of No Mercy, but it's an odd fact that you can get the game to load it and walk around it. There's no safe room available to complete it as the full map isn't rendered though.

Another funny thing is on No Mercy, the Humvee that's crashed into the apartment building will instakill you if you touch it. This is the humvee that's behind a fence that you normally can't get to by yourself.

I don't think the cleaning powder is called "Scout" I think it's called "Scour"

Fun fact about the elevator shaft in No Mercy: When you enter the elevator, you are on the 4th floor, and it takes you to the 28th floor.
As you go up, you can see the elevator doors to other floors and actually count what floor the elevator takes you to.
Problem is, it doesn't actually stop on the 28th floor. They probably didn't expect anyone to notice or bother counting. Oops.

Man, the L4D games were so dang good. Miss that era of gaming so much where gameplay was first and foremost and 'monetization' was buying the actual game and DLC.

Crazy how much stuff is hidden in this game, awesome video Shesez!

When the video ended I thought to myself "wait, that's it?." I feel like you could've gotten way more out of L4D, since we barely got anything outside of the first campaign.

Here's a freebee: though you don't generally see it ingame unless you have a bad run in with a Tank (or a Charger in the sequel) the final map of the No Mercy campaign (and maybe the others as well, it's been a while since I've played the games) does not correctly show the Mercy Hospital according to what the players go through in the 4th map, specifically the section after the elevator.

That area shows that the floor you end up on after the elevator was receiving renovations and thus has openings in which the players could be knocked out through to act as a final, 1HKO hurdle before reaching the end of the level.

This construction section is not seen when observing the entire building, either before the statistics roll, getting sent flying or just by no clipping around the map.

The helicopter at 8:30 with the number 23 on the side is actually the same helicopter that is crashed into the roof of the cut survival map Highrise. It's likely a re-used texture.

Also, about the burger tank sign at 10:00 - you actually pass through a burger tank in map 3 of No Mercy. They have some pretty good deals on the menu.

When you do L4D2, make sure to look inside the boats on The Last Stand's finale! There's a little easteregg there that most people don't know about, since you can only see it by noclipping. And don't forget the map in Blood Harvest that shows the original locations of the campaigns before the story was changed.
Man, there's just so many little details that are worth looking at, I'd write an entire novel if I went over all of them.

I think the deranged cow on the cereal is a reference to Mad Cow Disease, which, in fiction, a mutated version of causes the zombie outbreak.

2:50 Here's a tip for your L4D2 video: host_timescale 0.1 in the console will slow gameplay down enough for gameplay to be basically frozen. It's a godsend for stuff like this :)

10:08 I'm pretty sure they intended for the bottle to be see through and that's why there is so much detail inside, and of course, the cilinder inside the bottle is the liquid.

The actual default texture in the Left4Dead Hammer editor is actually a pills billboard texture. The grey grid is one of many dev textures, usually used when you're just trying to make a solid layout.
Usually that dev texture would have nodraw applied to it so it gets permanently culled, but someone must have forgot or just not cared enough to remove it.
