Giant deep-sea isopod swims away

We found this little guy hanging out on the sea floor while conducting a video survey of the abyssal plain near Montserrat. Bathynomus are the giant deep-sea relatives of the pillbug (woodlouse, roly-poly). The two red dots are from lasers mounted on the ROV and are 10 cm apart.

Awww! He's got propellers on him. I recently got a plushie of one of these guys and had to look up what they look like in their natural habitat. I'm not disappointed. Fascinating creatures.

Very cool. These creatures surely don't look very agile, much less like swimmers, but this one is pretty fast.
