This is absolutely FALSE! I'm not italian but I live in Rome since 2002. Yes, men don't usually move the chair or open the car door but they always pay if they take you out. Even my male friends always pay, I paid the bill a couple of times while they went to the bathroom and they took it as an offence!
With my women friends yes, we split "alla romana".
But if you have friends in the south part of Italy and they invite you over, leave your wallet at home, you'll never be allowed to pay for anything 😂😂😂

I think is more than fair when each part pay their bills. It is highly unfair expecting other people to pay for you unless the person you’re dating with knows you are not in a good financial situation to keep up with dating expenses. I really cannot believe this has been a norm for so long as dating can be very expensive.
