Holocaust Women's Health

During the Holocaust, women in concentration camps like Auschwitz faced unimaginable horrors and severe deprivations that profoundly affected their health and well-being. One significant impact was the cessation of menstruation among many women. In summary, the cessation of menstruation among women in Auschwitz and other concentration camps was primarily due to severe malnutrition, extreme physical stress, and psychological trauma, rather than intentional drugging. This aspect of their suffering highlights the profound impact of the harsh conditions imposed by the Nazi regime.

To all the people saying she looks too young, her name is Lilly Appelbaum Malnik, she’s 95. She’s been talking about her experiences for a long time

That is 100% possible and true. But women during the Warsaw uprising also lost their periods imidietly, cause stress causes it also. There is no need to malnourishment to happen

Keep documenting your grandmother's stories. We must preserve their experiences and never let their tragedies be forgotten. Their strength in survival is so inspirational. ❤

“Grandma when you were in Auschwitz” has got to be the craziest sentence starter ever

Can we take a moment to acknowledge the absolute insanity that is holocaust denial? These are real people who lived through real horrors, and they deserve to be seen and heard. I'm grateful she's alive and willing to share her story. ❤

I am german and we discussed that in school. There are strong indicators for drugs. Not only the high number (98%) of women who did not get their periods suggest it.
Survivors had strikingly high rates of primary or secondary infertility after the war.

When my dad died I was 13 and I stopped getting my period for like 5-7 months due to stress/ grief. Our mental health matters ❤

My grandma is 100, and she looks 80, so it is possible to look a lot younger than you are. God bless that beautiful lady.

Honestly, the absolutely horrendous things that they all endured, I'm glad your grandmother is here to tell us more about what they did. I believe you're grandmother without question, it doesn't surprise me but it does still hurt to see the pain in your grandmother's eyes. Have a wonderful day ❤

Nurse here. As the body gets super thin overly thin it eliminates systems that are not needed to survive. I’ve seen it with patients. Possible both were true

I was tortured relentlessly by my older sister growing up. Her favorite thing was to tell me that I was fat and no man would ever want me. I starved myself and lost my period at 14 for 2 years. Parents really need to pay attention to kids mistreating on another 😢

Trauma will stop a period. When my sister was in a car/train accident, my period stopped. She survived and my period eventually started again.

What a strong woman, she looks so good and healthy for 95 and above all her mind seems to be in amazingly shape! My late Polish grandmother who also had to go though German occupation and camps also keept good health and sharp mind all the way to her 90s. She was like a library of knowledge and I am sad that I was to young to ask her all of the questions and have an adult conversation, but still it was a real blessing that I was able to have her and learn from her throughout all of my child and teenage years. All of my family is regreting that we haven't wrote down her experiences. I really think you should think about it while there is still a possibility for that. Having a grandmother like ours is a blessing - so many lessons and so much love that they give. Mine was expressing love with food and candy. She and her husband were so happy that they got to live in a time when they are able to provide me with all of the candy and cookies that I could possibly be able to eat. They were looking at me eating and enjoying myself and they were laughing with joy. Now I understand that it was healing their inner child.

Years ago I heard a small group of women who were Holocaust survivors say they lost their cycles and didn't know why, but felt it was a blessing bc they didn't have to deal with it. I never forgot it bc I always wondered how. Extreme stress, starvation, malnutrition, but people were at different stages so how could it be a seemingly universal affect, but if from the time they arrived they were dosed then it would work out like that. Another torture done to innocent people.

In narcissistic abuse of relationships, women tend to not get their period. Your body is in such stress.
My three sisters and I never got our periods until we were much later in life. I just started getting my regularly in my thirties.. We were all brought up with a narcissistic mother and lived in Chaos. Interesting that we all had that happen. And then all got our periods when we moved out and healed later in life.
